The 7 Best New Year's Resolutions For College Students

A new year means a fresh start. It is, unfortunately, very easy for college students to get caught up in everything going on while away at school and you may find yourself falling off the tracks a little bit. Maybe it is about time to step back and reevaluate your habits. Adopt these resolutions and you will be sure to have a great start to a great year.

1. Get more sleep.

Studies have shown that college students are one of the most sleep-deprived populations. Furthermore, sleep deprivation in students has been linked to lower GPAs because sleep affects concentration, memory, and the ability to learn. With lack of sleep, also comes more illnesses, such as colds and the flu, feeling more stressed out, increased weight gain, increased mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Your body deserves and needs sleep. Although it may be difficult for undergraduate and graduate students to maintain a regular sleep schedule due to an overload of activities it is possible. Try to limit your napping during the day so that you can get a full 7-8 hours at night to let your body restore energy, fight off illnesses and fatigue by strengthening your immune system. Sleep is vital in order for you to perform better during the day.

2. Dedicate more time to studying. / Get organized.

College students are very busy. From club meetings, to fun events on campus, and even sporting events like basketball and football games, one has many options for how to spend their time. However, what is the main reason we are at college again? To be social? No. We are here to get an education. This new year, make sure to dedicate more time to studying rather than socializing. Every class requires studying for two or three times the amount of time you spend in class. For example, for a three credit hour class, you should be scheduling six to nine hours of studying each week for that one class. It sounds like a lot, but it helps to plan out your studying by using a calendar, whether it be a written one or one you can use on your computer.

3. Eat healthier.

The "Freshman 15" is real. It is common for college students to put on a little weight due to the lack of sleep, unhealthy food options, and lack of physical activity. Adopting a healthier lifestyle can improve nearly every aspect of your life. Studies have shown that your diet affects the brain neurochemistry that controls mood and response to stress, the way your brain and body interact, and the higher brain functions that control learning, memory and intellectual functioning. Therefore, the pizza and chips you have been munching on late at night in the library is doing you no good. Yes, on-campus food is convenient; however, it can be pricey and unhealthy. Try to visit the grocery store more often and get healthier foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Then, you can pack healthier lunches and won't have to worry about spending all of the money on your meal plan.

4. Do more physical activity.

Eating healthy may be a huge part of attaining a healthy lifestyle, but so is physical activity. The many benefits to being active include relieving stress, promoting regular sleeping patterns, and putting you in a better mood. Try walking to class more often, playing a club sport, or taking some group exercise classes at the gym on campus. You do not necessarily need to have an intense workout at the gym every day; however, making the effort to fit in a workout a few times a week is a great step toward getting healthy and fit this new year.

4. Get to know your professors more.

Believe it or not, a few visits to your professor's office hours could boost your grade a few points. Professors have hundreds of students, so what can you do to make yourself stand out? By going to their office hours, it shows that you care about their class and want to excel. They will see you putting in the extra effort, and will go out of their way to help you. Towards the end of the semester, if you are at that borderline between a B and an A, they might just bump you up because they know you deserve the higher grade. You might also find that once you get to know a professor, that they can help you with your career. Professors have a lot of connections and know people that could be your future employers. If you need help building your resume or with finding internships, professors will often times help you if they know your work ethic and see you coming to their office hours regularly. Building a strong relationship with your professors could be your key to success after you graduate.

5. Get more involved on campus.

Take this year to finally join those clubs you have showed some interest in. Step out of your comfort zone to try new things and you might discover new passions and hobbies. Through getting involved you will get more connected to your school and find resources that will help you be successful this coming year and beyond. Through your involvement in clubs and organizations on campus, you will make new friends who have similar interests as you. These clubs can even help you figure out what major you would like to pursue and a career path. Being very involved within the campus community can build your resume as well. Future employers want to see that you were productive with your time and that you have held leadership positions in campus organizations, so they know how well you will work within their company.

6. Talk to your parents more while you are away.

Your parents miss you, okay? So quit giving them the cold shoulder while you are away at college living it up. Take a few minutes to call them and catch up. Yes, they can be annoying and pestering, but they are your number one fans and biggest supporters. It might even help to get a pep talk from them if you are having a hard time finding the motivation to study.

7. Do more community service.

Our happiness increases when we help others. Seek out organizations on your campus that strive to serve others in your community and beyond it. You will surely meet some quality people along the way, and make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than you. You will be able to take the skills you develop from the different service projects you participate in and apply them to your everyday life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
