"Because I love you, you need to stop talking to any guys you know."
"Because I love you, I get so jealous that I can't control my actions."
"Because I love you, I want you to only spend time with me."
One afternoon I was scrolling through Facebook like I usually do every day, and suddenly I stumbled upon a Youtube video titled "#ThatsNotLove Campaign, Delete." I decided to click on it and watch the video, and ended it in tears.
The words in the video seemed all too familiar. It consisted of clips of young adults speaking the phrase "Because I love you" followed by words that are common in mentally abusive relationships. The first started out simple: "Because I love you, skip class and stay in bed with me all day. I just want to be with you all the time". Then, they gradually became worse. The jealousy of talking to someone else, telling your significant other to delete people from their phones and lives, and then saying "Because I love you, you got lucky. You understand. You feel alone."
This simple phrase "because I love you" can take on a completely different meaning when someone is in an abusive relationship. It escalates from a statement of care to one of control.
Many young people can identify the signs of physical abuse in a relationship, but not many realize the simple signs of mental abuse. More than one in three women and more than one in four men in the U.S. will be in a violent relationship in their life. The One Love Foundation was founded in the honor of a young woman named Yeardly Love, who was beaten to death by her boyfriend in 2010. The campaign works with young people to raise awareness about the warning signs of abuse and activate communities to work to change the statistics around relationship violence.
This is a truly moving campaign that speaks closely to my heart. I recommend everyone to check out the video below, go to www.joinonelove.org and see how you can get involved. Because everyone deserves to know what real love is.
