That One Time I Was Called A Slut

The labeling of women needs to be put to rest.

I want to tell you a story from about a year and a half ago. It's about a time in which I was labeled as a "slut" by one of my coworkers. Why was I called a slut? Did I sleep with him? Did I sleep with other coworkers? Did I even sleep with anyone? No. (Spoiler Alert: I'm actually still a virgin.)

So why was I labeled as a slut? Turns out, this so called "friend" of mine called me a slut for being nice to other people. Weird right? I know. Turns out that in today's society you cannot be friendly to others without being labeled something such as a slut, whore, etc.

Why do these labels exist? Why are friendly girls labeled as sluts and quiet girls labeled as prudes? Why is having sex with other people seen as something girls should be ashamed of, whereas guys should be glorified? Why can't I be friends with multiple guys without being called a slut? Why can't I be a virgin without being called a prude? Why do we categorize everything?

To this day, I am still afraid to try and become friends with some of my coworkers without being called something negative. I'm worried about the clothing I wear and how it affects how I am perceived by others. But I do not want to live that way. I don't want to be worried about whether my skirt is too short, or my pants are too long. I don't want to be seen as "asking for it" if I am wearing a dress that shows off my curves, or "matronly" for wearing a long skirt. I want to be free to wear what I want, when I want, without having to worry how it affects people's perception of me.

Let's stop labeling others. Let's move past that and into a new society that recognizes people as equals. We live in a world that people should not have to worry about what they wear or who they talk to. They should free to be themselves; their wonderfully, unique selves.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
