A Thank You To My Purple Dad

A Thank You To My Purple Dad
Emily Bowen

Dear Purple Dad,

Lat Thursday was the College Night mixer. It was such a blast seeing all the new Purples and Golds find their place in this crazy game called College Night.

But now that it's my second year, I'm purple-married to the best husband a Purple could ever ask for, and we have three amazing Purple babies of our own, I can't help but look back at how much you have influenced me in my first year at Montevallo.

You were the one that made me go purple. We met on a weird night when the girl who would be my big called me to come meet some of her friends. You sat next to me around the table and you didn't say much. I honestly barely remember you from that whole night.

Then a few days later, a girl in my sorority came up to me and said that her purple fiancé wanted me to be their purple baby, if I was a purple. That's honestly how I choice my side, even if I was leaning purple in the first place.

I remember you invited me to the College Night mixer chalking with you. We chalked the steps leading between our dorm buildings. We talked about College Night, since I still didn't really know much about it, and we talked about Fall Out Boy, which confirmed my choice even more.

I found you at the College Night mixer later that week. You had pink hair due to some botched hair dye experiment, so it was easy to spot you. You saw me and flagged me down to give me my first cow, which I still have on top of my dresser, by the way.

When I circled up for the first time that night, you grabbed my hand and told me not to be overwhelmed, because you saw in my face how scared I was. You screamed the side song with more enthusiasm than I've ever heard from you.

That whole semester, you became my rock. I went to you about everything, not just college night stuff, but also sorority stuff. When I didn't think anyone wanted to be my big, I asked if you could be my big. And you pretty much were my first semester. I'm forever grateful for that.

You introduced me to your fraternity, who became some of my best friends. You introduced me to one of your brothers, who would become my Purple fiancé a week later, and then my purple husband at Victory Party.

You held my hand at PJ Party. You recorded my Purple marriage at Victory Party. You let me record your Purple marriage (finally). You actually respond when I call you "Dad" instead of your actual name. You even suggested we do the cutest Purple fam photo-shoot ever.

Through all of the late night cheese stick and milkshake runs, through all of my tears and over-dramatic antics, you've been a key part of making my first year at college one of the best years of my life.

I can tell you that this Purple family would fall apart without you.

From the bottom of my heart, I just want to say thank you for being the best Purple Dad a Purple could ask for.

Love,
Your Purple Daughter

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
