A Thank You Letter to California Governor Jerry Brown

Dear Mr. Brown,

On the verge of one of the most controversial presidential elections this country has ever seen, it's been hard to show support for America during the past couple of months. I'll be honest- this country doesn't seem to have it's stuff together, so how can I be expected to be, "proud to be an American"?

Well, this week, you showed me that there are still people fighting, still people believing, and still politicians working to make a difference.

With your signature on AB 701 and AB 2888, I think I can speak for many when I say we are breathing a little easier. AB 701 gives the court power to treat any sex crimes and assaults as rape in the state of California. AB 2888 also guarantees that any defendant found guilty of these crimes will have to serve some time in the state prison.

While it's said that you initiated your support of these bills in the wake of the Brock Turner verdict and early release, I think it's been a long time coming. For too long, there have been numerous men and women who's attackers have gotten off with a slap on the wrist. This culture has somehow developed a blame-the-victim mentality. The light punishment for rapists is not okay. I'm happy that you've acknowledged and taken action against this.

And while the ink was still drying for your signature on theses bills, you also removed the statutes of limitations on rape. Now, anyone can come forward at any time and be heard. Victims do not have to be afraid of the legal repercussions of coming forward years after the act took place.

With all of this done, the only thing I can say right now is thank you. I know that you can't stop a man or woman from sexually assaulting another. I know that you can't walk the streets and protect every young woman walking to her car. And I know that rape is not a crime that will be completely demolished by this. But I also know that this will bring peace to those who have already suffered. I know that this will restore justice in the lives of some.

And most importantly, I know that you care. I hope that every other state will follow your lead and take action to stop these crimes. Thank you for being the voice.

Sincerely,

A Proud American

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
