Freshman roomie, where do I start?
I could start by talking about how annoyed you got when I woke up two hours before class everyday during syllabus week to shower, blow-dry my hair and brush my teeth (which I learned shortly after this that I do all way too loud, thanks to you). Or, I could start halfway through the year when we developed a (false) hatred towards each other because let's face it, you can't throw two overly-sassy, blonde, random girls together in one room with confidence that everything will turn out. Or, lastly, I could start by talking about the end of the year, and who you are to me now: my soulmate.
But, I think I'll start with a thank you.
You sure didn't choose me as a roommate. We both chose that school as a last resort and there we were, placed as random roommates with nothing, yet everything to expect of each other. You took me in with open arms, and I don't think I deserved a roommate like that: so, thank you.
What about all those times I forgot my keys in the room when I left for class? Even through the times we weren't fond of each other, you never left me locked out. That must have been annoying. Thank you.
Shortly after living with you, I learned that I didn't need to brush my teeth as hard/loud as I've been doing all my life. There's clearly some bad side effects from doing that and also makes for a super irritating roommate. Thank you for telling me this.
I remember one night I was finishing up my mascara in the mirror while getting ready to go out with some friends when I heard, "Why do you twitch your left eye when you put mascara on it?" Thanks for telling me this, I would most definitely still be doing it had you not told me.
You know my allergies, I'm really not allergic to anything other than wasps. Remember that one time I was walking back from class alone and got stung by one and you were willing to leave your sorority's chapter to make sure I was okay, seeing as I had forgotten my EpiPen? Thank you.
Let's face it, you probably never even dreamt of having a roommate as weird as me. But there you were, wide awake with me at 3:30 a.m. on a school night listening to me rant on and on about goats and laughing till we thought we were forming abs while sending each other pictures of dogs that really weren't that funny the following morning. Thanks for that, thanks for being up and thanks for laughing: whether you really thought it was funny or not.
Throughout all roommate hardships, there comes a point when you still need to remain a loyal roommate/friend, and you didn't do anything short of that. You were a shoulder to cry on, a friend to hold my secrets and a roommate to clean my side when I couldn't do it myself. Thank you.
Despite my random thank you's, you simply changed me for the better. Moving in with a random roommate your freshman year is scary as heck, but I would advise anyone to file a random given the opportunity. Because you never know, you may end up being as lucky as I was getting thrown into a room with a perfect random roomie like mine.
Love you always Steph.
