Whether you believe technology has a positive impact or a negative impact on society, the point is, technology has an impact. You may think that kids today are too involved with it or that things are much different now than they were in the past, but odds are something in your life is affected by technology every day.
Do you have a phone? Do you have a laptop? Well, you're reading this article so you must currently be sitting in front of some sort of electronic device.
What does your typical work day look like? Computers, phones, machines, tools, power grids: I'm sure there is something you use every day involving technology.
So, how does this technology affect you, where do we see the most technological use in our world, and why can technology be seen in such a negative light?
I'd like to start by pointing out some of the major categories technology has become integrated with. As previously mentioned, we see technology in the workplace, but what other aspects of our lives involve technology?
For one thing, technology is being seen a lot more in education. Many high schools and colleges use computers, smart boards, and other interactive learning tools with programs such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel to give lectures, allow note-taking, plot data, and print out papers or essays. You can also take part in technology-based courses that allow you to be prepared for a future career in this modern, technological world.
Technology is also seen in business. Companies and firms, large and small, use technology to file information, sell products, make decisions, meet deadlines, track data, and so much more. How and why are they able to do all of this? Because technology is fast. In order to keep up with competition and productivity, technological advancements need to be made continuously. As the companies increase in profit, popularity, and speed, we (the consumers) benefit from the organization and availability of the products we want to buy.
Perhaps the most important place for technological advancements is within science and medicine. As new discoveries are being made, better equipment is being created, and more cures are being found; the human race is greatly benefiting. If we were to stop progressing technologically, we would stop progressing altogether as a society. We need to develop, grow, and improve in order to quite literally keep some people alive. Technology saves lives through diagnostic imaging, procedures and testing, and cures and treatments. Many people rely greatly on medicine to remain healthy and stable, and without it we wouldn't thrive as much as we do now.
And finally, the most well-known category that relies heavily on technology is communication. We see this most evidently through social media. Technology keeps us in touch with people who are at even the greatest of distances. I use it to keep my family located all over the country updated on my life with pictures, news, and articles. The very act of texting or calling someone is a prime example of our use of technology on a daily basis. When's the last time you sent a text or made a phone call? My guess is that it wasn't too long ago. This immediate way of keeping in touch with people is the best way to stay connected and share news with one another.
TV, film, and radio are also considered communications. All three of which rely heavily on technology. Not only is it entertainment, but it can also be a source of information. News, historical movies or shows, and culture can all be seen within these medias. These medias exist because of technology.
So, while some may say that technology is bad because it's destroying social interactions, altering reality, promoting cyber-bullying, or causing other problems, I think it's quite the opposite. I believe, if used correctly, technology can encourage people to get to know one another at great distances and maintain relationships that are now far apart. I also believe technology has the power to promote love and positivity by allowing people to come together and support one another. I think a lot of what technology does for us is underrated and overlooked by many people, and I think we should appreciate everything it does for us on a daily basis. It's OK to take a step back from it every once in a while, but it's important to know that it plays a very significant role in our lives today and it will continue to do so for a very long time.
