There are many pros and cons of being a teachers child, especially when they teach in the school district you go to. My mom has taught at the same school I attended for 21 years now. Let's just say it was a rollercoaster being on the same campus every day for 13 years.

Pro: She was literally a building/hallway away.

This was honestly the greatest perk. We all know I suffer from migraines, so whenever I needed anything I would just call or walk down to her office. My situation definitely would've been a lot worse if she wasn't always there.

Con: You are held to a higher standard than other students.

Teachers expected me to perform better and above average just because I was a teachers kid. This was fun considering I was a very average student in school.

Pro: Her "teacher friends" are like family.

They've practically helped raise me. Some of them I even treat like aunt and grandparent figures. I've been on numerous vacations with a handful of them and I know I always have a supportive group on my side when I need them.

Con: My mother has followed me everywhere.

We were in the same elementary school together, then she moved up to junior high with me and then high school. The only grade we weren't in the same building together was my freshman year. We always joked that she was going to follow me to college.

Pro: You have a personal tutor for life.

If I need help with homework if I have a big test coming up, if I don't understand something, "where's mom?". She's always a huge help when it comes to school work and still is even though I'm in college.

Con: The number of times my tongue has been threatened is alarming.

Yes, I said my tongue. I'm constantly surrounded by teachers, therefore, I know way too much gossip and drama for my own well being. I can't tell you how many times my mother has said to me, "if you repeat this, I will rip your tongue out and beat you with it." Isn't she just pleasant?

Pro: Going to the grocery, you'd think they were a celeb.

This is like a 2-hour excursion because you are guaranteed to see half the school in there and the woman knows everyone, I swear.

Con: What you do could reflect on them.

Being an upperclassman was hard. You want to be rebellious, have fun with your friends, do senior pranks, make bad decisions, etc. Well if I get in trouble it could make my mom look bad, so I was always watching my back during this time because like I said, she will rip my tongue out.

Pro: You're the first to know about snow delays or if something exciting happens.

I never even had to wake up on snow days to see if there was a delay because 9 times out of 10, my mother had already known before 5 AM and if a teacher was pregnant or a student got expelled, she always knew the gossip.

Con: Parties, what parties?

Maybe when I was 13 parties were acceptable, but once I got into high school, my parties were 4 friends swimming in my pool in the middle of the day and if I wanted to go to a friends party, you best bet I had to lay low and be on my best behavior.

Pro: When you're having a conversation and she corrects your grammar.

This woman can correct my English so fast, it's scary. I'm going to say this is a pro because I'm a journalism major and I shouldn't be making those mistakes in my writing or when talking to important people.

Being a teachers daughter has been an interesting ride and I'm sure it will continue to be until she retires. Overall, her career choice has shaped me into me and has given me a huge support system and a second family that I can always count on and I know she can too.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
