Tatted And Proud

Don't be fearful of regret.

Tatted And Proud
Mikaela Alioto

I used to be "anti-tattoo" growing up. It is reasonable to not want to permanently mark your body, especially being an ever-evolving young adult. In retrospect I think I made being conservative synonymous with being fearful. But after living some of my worst fears, I have developed an open perception to adversity. I think what really sold me on getting a tattoo was when I identified a life purpose I wanted to keep no matter what happens.

As an angsty teen, I have questioned why I am worth living in this world or if I even want to be. It wasn't until I took a course in college entitled Race and Ethnicity taught by a true role model and badass, Professor Billy Miller, that I saw each individual's equal potential to bless. His passion woke me up to a fight worth battling—the fight to bring light to the world. I'm not the most avid Bible-reader but there are a few passages I have always found comforting. "Blessed are the peacemakers" is so simple and straightforward; it instructs me if all else fails, promote good.

Anybody who has a tattoo has dealt with the negative stigmas of having one. You have also probably experienced the half grimaces of those doubting your certainty. I definitely had people thinking I would regret my choice. But sometimes you just have to let yourself take ownership of how you live your life. If I don't accomplish anything else in my time alive, I just want to have brought joy and love to those around me. Any reminder to this goal keeps me going. For all the sad memories I carry, there have also been moments of pure happiness I feel grateful to possess.

All in all, I feel if you believe in something, whatever it is, do not be afraid to commit. And all those who question you are not worth the self doubt. I'd be lying if I claimed there were't people I regret meeting or decisions I regret making, but I'm so tired of worrying about the inevitable. Live your highest sense of right—get a tattoo if you want and have no regrets!

Blessed are the Peacemakers—and the tatted.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
