Super Bowl 50 Commercial Awards

Some people watch the Super Bowl each year for the football, but let’s be honest…many of us watch it for the commercials.

Super Bowl 50 Commercial Awards

The Super Bowl is known to have some of the best commercials every year, some even go down in history and are talked about for years to come. Much is expected from them each year and they rarely disappoint. Some are funny, some are heartwarming, and some are deep. Similar to awards received in high school yearbooks, I am going to give out my version of those awards for the Super Bowl commercials of 2016.

Most heartwarming- "This One's For Mom" (Campbell's)

The soup featured in this ad might be warm, but the message throughout it was even warmer. After watching this commercial, it really made me want to call my mom. It was a great dedication to moms everywhere and for all they do for us. Well done Campbell's, you did it again.

Best use of a celebrity- "Restricted Bling" (T-Mobile)

You can't go wrong with Drake and it looks like T-Mobile thought the same thing. The catchy song and matching dance moves that went viral these past few months made their way into a Super Bowl commercial and it's everything you've ever wanted. Though the song may have been "ruined" in the commercial, the ad itself was anything but ruined.

Hottest- "Ryanville" (Hyundai)

This category was only created because of this commercial featuring not one, but many Ryan Reynolds. I, too, would be distracted if many versions of that man were walking around my neighborhood. (*Insert heart eyes emoji*)

Best underlying message- "#Defylabels" (MINI USA)

Labels are stupid and MINI USA thinks so too. Thanks for the reminder that we should stop labeling people and should stop judging people so quickly. Celebrities were used, but in this case, it wasn't about them...it was about what they stood for and said. Good job MINI, and remember to #Defylabels.

Most likely to make you laugh out loud- "Ultrasound" (Doritos)

Doritos is at it again, and for another year in a row, they did not disappoint. This year's commercial for Doritos had a lot to live up to from previously aired commercials in years past. We look forward to Doritos Super Bowl commercials every year because they never disappoint to make you laugh, and this year was no different.

Best PSA- "Every Drop Counts" (Colgate)

Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth: an important reminder brought to everyone by Colgate. It was powerful enough to make an impact in our heads about the importance of not wasting water because there are others in need of it.

Most likely to make you feel some feels- "Commander" (Audi)

Feels were definitely felt from start to finish of this ad. The feels only got stronger as the late David Bowie's music played in the background and grew louder. It pulled at some heartstrings and really captured my attention.

Best music- "A New Truck To Love" (Honda)

Clever, cute, and classic: a perfect combination used in this commercial for the new Honda pickup truck. Sheep singing Queen's classic "Somebody to Love" was not only clever, but also extremely cute.

Most likely to make you say ‘WTF’- "Puppymonkeybaby" (Mountain Dew)

But seriously, WTF Mountain Dew? What were you thinking when you came up with this idea? Why did you think this would get people to buy the new Kickstarts? There's a high possibility that the "Puppy Monkey Baby" creature is going to haunt me in the my sleep tonight. All I have to say is, Mountain Don't.

Best use of animals- "Weiner Stampede" (HEINZ)

If you like seeing Weiner dogs dressed up as hot dogs, then this is the perfect commercial for you. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wishes they had a stampede of hotdog dressed Weiner dogs running at them. This could also win an award for being the cutest Super Bowl commercial.

Weirdest- "#AvosinSpace" (Avocados from Mexico)

It was weird but fun and pretty funny. It sort of makes you go WTF but in a good way...unlike "Puppymonkeybaby" (referenced above). Avocados from Mexico, you did a good job at your second ever Super Bowl commercial. Congrats to that!

Best beer ad- "The Bud Light Party" (Bud Light)

Because what's better than Seth Rogen, Amy Schumer, and beer? Nothing, which is why this is the best beer commercial of the Super Bowl. Now, if only this could be made into a real political party. I would totally vote for it.

Honorable mentions:

"First Date" (Hyundai)

Sorry Kevin Hart, you didn't quite make the cut for any of these awards. I still thoroughly enjoyed this commercial and thought it was pretty funny.

"Drop The Balls" (T-Mobile)

Nice one again, T-Mobile, you're doing a great job at making fun of celebs this Super Bowl and it's amazing.

"Marilyn" (Snickers)

Snickers, of course, had to release a "you get ____ when you're hungry" commercial for the Super Bowl. This one might be one of their best yet as it featured William Defoe dressed as Marilyn Monroe.

"Movin On Up" (Apartments.com)

This will probably be a memorable one for many people considering the song is already stuck in my head a bit. Plus, their use of throwing in "Weezy" was a good move.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
