Sun Devil Hockey successfully emerges out from the desert to play against a Harvard Crimson athletic team, one of the best college hockey teams in the nation, on Friday night.
Immediately entering Gila River Arena, Arizona State University’s student section sounded excited to support the Devil’s and play against Harvard.
The beginning of the first period started slow until Harvard University players scored twice against the Sun Devil’s towards the end of the period.
The two scores didn’t crush ASU’s student section's spirit, as graduate student Andrew Johnson confirmed.
“I feel like we’ve done very well, but it’s just a transition to the next level,” said Johnson about the success in ASU becoming a Division I team.
In regards to the game, Johnson felt like there were things that could definitely change.
“There are little mistakes made here and there, but it’ll only get better,” said Johnson.
The second period slowed down after that, with only one additional goal from Harvard leaving the total 5-0.
Cheers from the students continued to sound optimistic.
The second period immediately differed from the first because it started rapidly with two scores from Harvard players within the first ten minutes.
Meanwhile, a few ASU fans were noticeably getting frustrated at the results of the game.
Shouting recommendations, nearly touching the glass, Rich Durstine was upset and frustrated with the Sun Devil team.
“The thing that’s upsetting me the most is the how timid the team can come off and everyone’s fear to shoot against the other team,” said Durstine, a regular ASU hockey fan.
Durstine and his young children were actively involved the whole game with signs, shouting support, recommendations and cheers.
The third period started fast with two goals from Harvard, slowed down with no more goals, and students were still remaining optimistic about the Sun Devils hockey team.
The game came to an end with a total score of 7-0. Harvard took home the win, while a sun devil felt proud regardless of the outcome.
Jade Hanson, a dedicated ASU hockey fan expressed her happiness for the Sun devil Team.
“I’m happy that we’re at where we’re at. The hockey team has done so well, and I’m always proud after each game,” said Hanson.
From the looks of it, after students and fans showed their support, ASU Hockey fans aren’t going to lose hope and always remain supportive.
“ASU’s social media is a good resource for updates on the hockey team, and it helps me get to each home game,” said Hanson.
