Suicide By Lifestyle

We are our own worst enemy.

I am terrified and disheartened each day, the news littered with more despair, hatred, pain. Violence inflicted on humans by other humans, the devastation of our planet and all the animals and plants that inhabit it. They always say that common sense isn't so common, and I guess this is proof that this statement is true. Questions haunt me at how we could be, as such a supposedly advanced and intelligent species, so inept in these areas crucial to our sustenance.

How is it so easy to neglect our prominent role as the ring leader in the destruction of the world as we know it, social, environmental, or otherwise?

When did the value of morality and ethical treatment become diminished? Moreso, why was it never at the forefront? To cast aside all empathy and consideration for anything outside of our personal "goals" on the pursuit to something as synthetic as "success," the imaginary climb to the "top" of the socially acceptable ladder. For what, may I ask? Whether it be for the environment, animals, or fellow humans, all compassion seems to be lost.

Since when is the concept of power, of money, worshipped?

Since when does convenience trump quality?

Since when is it so easy for us to dismiss the detrimental damage that we bring upon ourselves by self poisoning our water, air, and the foods we eat; all the while fighting wars over components of life that are literally constructed by the same people that are arguing over them, as if they are some unquestionable truth?

Why are we opening our mouths to argue? To be right rather than initiate change? To respond back rather than listen and learn?

At what point do we realize this is clearly not working?

At what point do we take responsibility?

At what point do we realize that this is our problem? As individuals, as groups, as humans: we are committing mass suicide by lifestyle.

So, to you, reader. I am reaching out for you to make a ripple. Tell your friends to make ripples. Speak up, stand up. Eventually, I am hoping that these ripples can form a wave. Stop being afraid to question the way things operate. No change was ever made by going along with the gradient. Care about things that are bigger than yourself. Have empathy. Be aware that perspectives vary and therefore there are a multitude of views out there than just your own. Be adaptable and willing to change. This isn't a matter of posing blame of a political sort. This is a plea, full blown begging, of a mindset shift among what is supposed to be the most emotionally available and mentally capacitated species on the planet. Act like it. Wake the hell up. Before its too late. The future literally depends on it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
