After a long summer of working and just hanging around, the thought of school starting again is actually exciting. You like the idea of getting back into a routine and knowing that tests and assignments are coming up doesn’t make you want to cry.
Syllabus week is one of the greatest weeks of the year and you just want school to start right away – but syllabus week doesn't just bring good times, it also brings the treacherous syllabus itself.
Syllabi are one of the most daunting things about starting a new semester. Whether you are in class and falling asleep as your professor reads through it, or taking an online class and are supposed to read it yourself, it just sucks. And if you are taking an online class, professors make you take a syllabus quiz that just annoys you because it takes an hour of your time just to find the exact wording in the syllabus. Most of the time this quiz doesn't even give you some free points so it's not helpful in the slightest.
As the week goes on you start figuring out what you need for each class and hoping that the required textbook actually isn’t “required”. It’s not enough that we’re paying tuition. Someone decided to make an expensive, thick and heavy book only half filled with useful information to add another $100 per class. Our backs and wallets thank you, book people.
You make lists and fill out your planner with every assignment in your new set of colored pens, but you know you won't be planning ahead after a few weeks. We just do this to make ourselves feel better and make our planners look full.
After you survive syllabus week and once you get your bearings for each class you feel prepared for the semester again and are ready to dive in.
