I'm a fan of underdogs. I always find myself cheering on the little guy, and I have no problem going against the big dog. That being said, I do not support the Kardashians in any way, shape, or form.
Now, you may be asking, "Delaney, how are the Kardashians remotely underdogs? They're rich and famous." How did they achieve that fame, though? Mostly through Kim Kardashian's released sex tape. When a tape like that is released, I'm inclined to be empathetic for the parties involved. But the Kardashians rise to fame isn't what I have a problem with.
My main issue with the Kardashians is exemplified through Kylie.
Kylie Jenner is an 18-year-old socialite and "model". Kylie is dating Tyga, a 25-year-old rapper. That's a seven-year age difference during some pretty formative years. And to top off that already gross situation, they were together before Jenner turned 18. Kylie has a $2.7 million house, a Ferrari, and a collection of clothes that if sold, the total amount could feed a third world country for 10 years. She gave a cake to her friend with a racial slur on it. Oh, and she's culturally appropriating like no other celebrity right now (other than the current appropriation queen, Miley Cyrus).
From cornrows to bindis to manipulating her lips to increase their size (#kyliejennerlipchallenge flashbacks, anyone?), Kylie has appropriated a lot of different cultures. If she would only realize her privilege and admit to what she's really doing (stealing other's culture), I wouldn't have a problem. But she continues to dismiss people, like Amandla Stenberg from "Hunger Games," who try to help her realize her faults. And therein lies the problem.
The Kardashians aren't just spoiled; they believe they are the center of the world. They're willfully ignorant, too. They could do incredible things with their fame and power, but they choose to squander it.
We shouldn't praise/support these types of people. We should be praising strong, courageous women like Malala Yousafzi, who use their power for the betterment of the world.
I think that the Kardashians are a small indicator of a bigger problem in our world. It's nothing personal, but to me, they're symbols of what I don't want my family and children to be in the future.
