10 Ways to get you back on track when you've lost your motivation

It's a tricky situation when it seems that all of your motivation is gone.

Motivation

Trust me when I say that I get it.

You might not know when it happened, or exactly why it happened, and that's okay. What's not OK is staying in this state permanently. You need to get up, shake off the dust, and help yourself become much better than you were before.

Here are 10 steps to helping you get back on your feet after you've lost your spark.

1. Practice better eating habits.

Try your best to eat the recommended number of meals each day, and make sure what you're eating has nutritional value. Changing your eating habits is a great way to help you feel better.

2. Exercise regularly.

Exercise is a great stress reliever, and I don't mean just lifting weights and running. You could swim, or do yoga which are two very relaxing forms of exercise.

3. Practice positivity.

I recently saw a tweet that suggested replacing the word sorry with thank you. Therefore, instead of saying, "Sorry, I'm late," you can say, "Thank you for waiting for me." Just a small but effective way to turn a negative into a positive.

4. Invest more time in the things the make you happy.

This could be your friends, a hobby or any number of things. If it makes you happy, then you should definitely spend more time doing it.

5. Free yourself from toxic relationships.

This can be a hard one because toxic relationships come in many forms. However, don't be afraid to free yourself from any relationship. That is detrimental to you and your own health.

6. Meditate.

Meditation is a great way to focus on yourself, think positive thoughts and relax. I didn't think it actually worked until I tried it, and it has made a real difference. If you aren't sure where to start, there are great apps to guide you.

7. Take care of yourself.

This is a broad one, but personally, I feel better when my hair is done and have makeup on. You could easily get your nails done, or just making sure your hair is brushed every day. Really, it can be anything that boosts your self-esteem.

8. Practice building yourself up rather than tearing yourself down.

This one is difficult. As humans, it is easy to focus on the things that we don't like about ourselves, but we should be spending more time focusing on all of the great things about us. I'm not saying that you can't want to change something about yourself, but make sure you are doing it in a positive way.

9. Don't rely on others for your happiness.

I know it's easy to get lost looking for someone to be in your life. However, the more that you place your happiness on that someone being in your life, the less happy you are going to be.

Find happiness in yourself, and that happiness will attract a person that matches the level of happy that you have.

10. Keep track of your progress and reflect.

When on the road to getting your spark back and becoming a better you, it's going to be difficult at times. You are going to have to take baby steps, and there are probably going to be setbacks, but keeping track of the progress you are making and reflecting on how far you have come is a great way to stay motivated.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
