One of the toughest challenges in life is staying motivated. Motivation means so much in every aspect of life. As college students, we have many hardships. Trying to pass exams, pay rent, socialize and interning all start with motivation and passion. How do we stay motivated to reach our dreams? I have suffered through this question on a Friday night while everyone is out having fun and partying. I laid in bed after work, questioning life. VCU has one of the most diverse groups of students from ethnicities, religion, hobbies and everything in between. Sometimes I wonder what makes me stand out above all of the other amazing pupils? How do I motivate myself to achieve my goals?

Whenever my mind begins pondering these questions, I reanalyze my life and see all the great achievements I have completed. Close your eyes and just think.

Every day I am able to wake up in a beautiful world. I have food to eat every day to keep me healthy, a shelter to keep me safe, clothes to keep me protected. I have friends and family who love me and appreciate me. I am amazing, beautiful, strong, confident, talented and a great person. There are so many great memories and achievements I have accomplished.

Sometimes slowing down life and rethinking the small privileges we have can make you feel so much better. Expensive, materialistic items are never comparable to the gift we are given every day.

Studying for college classes is never easy. What are a few things that can keep you motivated to keep studying?

1. Have you ever walked into a room and see everyone working and felt like you should too? I have. Whenever midterm and finals week rolls around, the library is the new party house. I often become more motivated and diligent when I study around other students studying. It gives me a feeling of if they can do it, I can do it.

2. Try to stay organized. There is a reason why organization is such an admirable skill. Know dates of quizzes/exams, study groups, and professor office hours.

3. Socialize! Socializing may be one of the best ways to stay motivated. Motivations from others always make me work harder. It may be embarrassing to start conversations in class but in most cases, people like to socialize and enjoy the company. This can also lead to friendships which help out of class socializing.

4. Relax. Don't take on more than you can handle. Many of us have that first-hand experience. It is okay to move at your own pace!

Staying motivated is difficult. In the end, pursue what you love. That is the easiest way to stay motivated and reach you final goal in life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
