If you have been on Facebook this past week or you don’t live under a rock, you probably know the scandal with the Starbucks Coffee cup. The coffee cup usually have some snowflakes, maybe a reindeer or two and overall showcases theme of Christmas. However, this year the coffee cup is plain red and the Starbucks symbol is green. That’s still implies the Christmas theme and it holds coffee like it’s supposed to so there’s nothing wrong with it right? Wrong.
Ever since the coffee cup has made its debut, people have seen the coffee cup as a “War on Christmas.” Specifically, Christians see this coffee cup that doesn’t say “Merry Christmas” or have anything to do with Christmas, besides the colors, and decide that we should boycott Starbucks. According to Stock Watc, Starbucks stock has gone down 2.18 percent because of a coffee cup! Multiple people have put their input in on this fiasco, from everyday people to one of the candidates for president.
Overall, people are saying how Christmas is completely ruined because of this coffee cup. Breitbart.com had their headline “War on Christmas: Starbucks red cups are emblematic of the Christian culture cleansing of west.” However, the majority of people are acknowledging how dumb this really is. Donald Trump weighed in on this War on Christmas and said “Maybe we should boycott Starbucks? I don’t know. Seriously, I don’t care.”
Demi Lovato tweeted “Why doesn't @Starbucks at least make the cups about the actual season: winter? (snowflakes, snowmen..etc.)” Other people are being fun and saying that their name is “Merry Christmas” so their coffee cup is pro-Christmas. Then, there are the people who remember the ghost of Christmas coffee cup past.
Let us take a time to remember Starbucks' past Christmas coffee cups. In 2013, the coffee cup had a cute snowflake design and was red and had the green Starbucks logo. Not once does it say “Merry Christmas” on it or have anything about Christmas on it. But, there was no controversy and everyone was happy with their coffee cup. In 2014, the coffee cup was red with the green logo, and was one big snowflake that took up the entire cup. Once again, nothing with Christmas on it but everyone was still happy. And now in 2015, they had a simple design that is red with the green logo. Now everyone is mad and has to say that Starbucks is against Christmas. Let’s remember how there is still the Starbucks Christmas blend for coffee. Starbucks is definitely against Christmas.
What makes this worse is that Dunkin Donuts saw this and took the opportunity to make their coffee cup Christmas-oriented to get more business. People are jumping for joy over Dunkin Donuts coffee cup that reads “Joy.” There are little Christmas tree branches surrounding the word and the cup in white. Some responses have been “See how to do it Starbucks…Dunkin Donuts isn’t run by a bunch of anti-Christmas terrorists, #WarOnChristmas." And others are saying, “I dunno who Joy is, but I sure don’t want her name on my coffee cup during the Christmas season! Get a grip, @DunkinDonuts!” And then there are people who are like me and say “#ItsJustACup, get over it. Drink your coffee. Move on. Jesus.”
Overall, this coffee cup fiasco is dumb. If you like coffee and you have a cup that won’t burn your hands, then you should be happy. The Starbucks design is still basic enough for your Christmas Instagram post. If your Christmas spirit rides on the design of your coffee cup, then you need to re-evaluate your life.
