What Going to the Gym is Like As Told by Petra Solano

Petra Solano's (from Jane the Virgin) various facial expressions can attest to the love-hate relationship with the gym.

Recently, I began working out at the gym three to four days per week. So far, while I am only in my second week of my exercise regimen, I feel so much better about myself-- physically, mentally, you name it.

When I am not being screamed at by my trainer to do more squats, usually you can find me with my nose buried inside of a textbook (Gotta get those straight A's!) or watching Netflix. Lately, I have been binge-watching Jane the Virgin, and have come to develop a love-hate relationship with the character Petra Solano.

Petra is sneaky and mean, but her antics are hilarious and they often come back to bite her in the behind, followed by her priceless facial expressions. I have the same love-hate relationship with the gym, which is why I had Petra help me compile and explain the following scenarios that can happen at the gym:

1.) When you wake up in the morning and you're trying to decide if it's absolutely necessary for you to go to the gym or not.

I mean, I went yesterday, that should be good enough, right?

2.) When you decide that you have to go and you're in the car on the way there.

Seriously, how bad could it be?

3.) When you begin your warm-ups and you're already tired and you wonder what you got yourself into.

I knew that I should have stayed in bed today...

4.) When you hear your trainer say the words "leg day" and you have to act like you are prepared for 50 squats.

NEVER SKIP LEG DAY!!!

5.) Or when it's cardio day and you're forced to run a few miles, and you think you are going to die after 0.4 miles:

That cramp you get in your side from running...we all know what I'm talking about, right?

6.) Watching in horror as you see your trainer adding more weights to the bar as if you can actually lift the thing.

Who do you think I am, Arnold Schwarzenegger?

7.) When you're working on your abs and your trainer makes you hold a bicycle crunch for an extended period of time.

I've said something to that effect to my trainer before.

8.) Basically anything that your trainer asks you to do you're like:

But...100 jumping jacks? HOW?

9.) When you see other people working out at the gym and feel motivated for a short 0.5 seconds to push even harder.

But then it is right back to wishing the workout would be over already.

10.) When your trainer asks how your eating habits have been:

Oh, y'know, some roast beef, some chicken, a pizza...

11.) When you're exhausted and your trainer keeps yelling at you and asking you why you can't do the exercises correctly.

And because I am entirely out of energy and my legs feel like Jell-o.

12.) When you think you are finally done with the workout and you hear your trainer say "five more!"

Seriously, you can see that I am dying here, you can't cut me a LITTLE bit of slack, not even a little?

13.) When you're finally finished with your grueling workout routine and you completed your last cool-down exercise.

One word: HALLELUJAH.

14.) When you feel like you can conquer the world for the rest of the day after you've showered and changed into fresh clothes.

Yeah, that's right. I did 120 leg presses today, do NOT mess with me.

15.) When you have to repeat the process all over again the next day and you're really sore but your trainer is just like:

If anything, they'll increase the workout intensity so that they can watch you suffer some more.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
