The men’s baseball season is upon us, and we could not be more ready. The SEC Western division champions, are gearing up for another season and the fans are filling their coolers in hopes of a home run beer shower. With more than 7,000 fans making an appearance for the games, it is no secret baseball heaven is located in Oxford. An Ole Miss Rebel fan knows baseball season is a time to show off your formal cooler, wear a bucket hat, throw on an old t-shirt, and enjoy the weather in left field.
The rankings in the U.S. Today coaches pre-season poll rank the Rebels 18th in country. However, this season they are taking a hit when it comes to losing some powerhouses on offense. Three of the top ten hitters from last season are back for another season with Mike Bianco, including Orvis, Woodman, and Robinson. Robinson had a great freshman year and was even the starting shortstop. Coaches and fans are ready to see his defense back in action. Christian Trent and Sam Smith are stepping up and filling in some of the holes in the rotation. In addition, Colby Bortles has been the talk of the field for a while since the fall scrimmages. Fans are ready to see what the sophomore third baseman has in store for this spring.
Ole Miss baseball is a huge spectator sport. Right field holds about 2,000 fans who have reclaimed the area as a BYOB invitation. There are three things you will find in left field: beer, solo cups, and heckling. Ole Miss baseball is a past time where fans join in to watch the beautiful games under the warm Mississippi sun, only to be cooled off by a much needed beer shower. Get ready to help cheer, “throw it in the dirt,” place your lawn chairs out early, bet on your favorite solo cup, and stay late. Hotty Toddy!
