Spring Break Tips

Spring break: the mid-spring semester holiday when college students around the country flock to warmer regions, normally along the coast, and push paper due dates and midterm study guides into the recesses of their minds (if only). Students tend to spend their break in various ways. Some might cruise down to the Bahamas, a couple may fly out to the Mexican vacation hub that is Cancun, a brave few decide to endure the 12 hour 30 minute (14 hours if you decide to stop 7 times along the way) trip down to Key West, and a handful may decide to forgo all the festivities and just kick their feet up at home for the week.

Whether you plan on spending the week at home or soaking up the sun on a Florida beach with thousands of other 20-somethings, most people plan on this week revolving around some much needed rest and relaxation. If you plan on going away for the week you don’t want to worry about your money being stolen or the dreaded sunburn, so here a few Spring Break Tips to make your vacation oh so pleasant.

Alcohol Concealment

Say you’re travelling somewhere and you need to conceal your vodka or other light colored liquor. There is a brilliant solution to your problem. Take an empty Listerine bottle and fill it with the clear liquor of choice, then add food coloring. It will look just like Listerine. Just don’t forget and accidentally rinse your mouth with liquor…unless you aspire to be Ke$ha.

Sunscreen

Sunburn is painful and an absolute nuisance, especially when you would rather spend your week relaxing on the beach and not slather aloe all over your body 5 times a day. With that being said, wear sunscreen. You’re still able to get a tan and stay safe doing it.

Personal Belongings

Worrying about having your possessions stolen while on the beach is a constant concern, but not anymore. Clean out an old sunscreen bottle or ChapStick tube. Rolled up bills will fit easily in the ChapStick tube and your cellphone or any other items are easily concealed in the sunscreen bottle.

Food

If your accommodation features a kitchen plan on buying some groceries. Meals in these tourist locations tend to cost a lot of money. You’re going to save a lot of money by buying food and cooking most of your meals for yourself. You and your friends can even buy groceries and cook big meals, like dinner as a team. This way you can save your already limited dollars on things like club covers and drinks.

Hydrate!

This last tip isn’t really a tip, its more common sense. If you plan on drinking alcohol then you should also drink plenty of water. Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it will make you pee, a lot. This is what leads to dehydration, and dehydration + heat is an uncomfortable mix. Just make sure you stay hydrated, your body will thank you in a couple of weeks

Following these tips and making good decisions should result in a fun filled week. We’ve been working hard for a couple of months now and deserve a bit of leisure. Enjoy your break!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
