If You Are On The Fence About Sorority Recruitment, Take It From Me, It Is Worth The Risk

Joining a sorority can be an intimidating thing.

Trust me.

Before I went through recruitment I can not tell you the number of times I tried looking up what recruitment was actually going to be like, or what really went on during this intimidating week.

I am here to tell you that no matter how scary the process might seem, to begin with, it is 100% worth your time.

Regardless of if you end up joining a sorority or not, going through the recruitment process is a huge learning experience, and can only help you grow as a person.

I could go on and on about reasons why joining a sorority is such an amazing opportunity but for now, I will just stick to the following three:

OPPORTUNITY

Ashley Holland

Unlike the movies where sororities seem to be stereotyped and typically display certain images that may not be true, being in a sorority actually comes with an abundance of opportunity.

Sure, I had always done some community service in high school, and wanted to be involved in a position that I probably would not enjoy, but that would look good on a college application or resume, but after joining my sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, I was able to have exposure to so many opportunities, and ones that I would actually want to be a part of and enjoy.

Going through recruitment, you will learn about each sorority's philanthropy, which should play a part in making your decision in which sorority you might like to join. Alpha Chi has provided me with a multitude of service events that I am able to participate in that support a cause that I am truly interested in.

My sorority supports the fight against domestic violence, and not only do we participate in events at other locations, but we also host our own. This opens up a world of opportunity for an individual to help out in anything varying from planning, setting up, promoting, and so much more.

Another way a sorority is sure to provide you with ways to get involved is through leadership positions. There is a position to be held in almost any field you could probably think of. There are positions ranging from event planning, social media, recruitment, as well as ones that involve risk management, and presidency. There are so many aspects of what makes a sorority, and you are sure to find a position if that is your desire, that suits you and your personal niche.

COMMUNITY

Ashley Holland

One of the main reasons I wanted to join a sorority in the first place was for the fact that I was going to be attending a college on the other side of the country. I knew absolutely no one and knew that going to a school as big as Arizona State it might have become easy to get lost or find a solid group of friends.

Through joining a sorority, I have been able to find an amazing group of girls that I can relate to, and that I know will be my lifelong friends.

Through attending events hosted by your sorority, and even just going to chapter meetings, you will constantly be greeted by the same faces, and always be surrounded by this same group of girls.

In my opinion, this creates a sense of closeness, and community, knowing that you are all in these same things together and that this same group of girls is always going to be there to support you through all of your college, and life experience, good and bad. I could not be more grateful for this community that I am a part of because through this, I have managed to meet some of my best friends.

AN EXPERIENCE THAT LASTS A LIFETIME (LITERALLY)

Ashley Holland

Joining a sorority is a lifetime commitment, so this actually is an experience that lasts a lifetime. Being in a sorority does not end after graduating college. There will always be opportunities for you to continuously be involved, even as a college graduate. Sororities host alumni events and take part in things such as Greek Week, and Homecoming where alumni are welcomed back.

Being an advisor for your sorority is a great way to continue your involvement after graduation, although there are other positions able to be held, large and small, that can also keep you involved. This could be beneficial for you is so many ways as you will always have this connection with others who are in your organization.

Being able to connect with sorority members from other generations creates a world of networking opportunities for you, and who knows who the kinds of amazing connections you may make?

Not too long ago I was actually in the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport when someone approached me because I was wearing a backpack with my sorority letters on it. The man who came up to me was so excited because he wanted to tell me that his wife was a part of the same sorority as I am. It was a very cool interaction, and interesting that someone in such a crowded place would also be a part of the same organization as myself. It is things such as this that make living in such a big world feel so small.

So, how does all of that sound?

Hopefully, through this I am able to give you a little bit of insight on what wonderful benefits being in a sorority brings, and why I believe you should go through recruitment.

Trust me, you won't regret it!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
