Sorority Mom's Weekend

Pi Phi moms weekend was one of the greatest times I have ever had with my mother throughout my 20 years of life. As a freshman, by this time of the year, you're desperate for summertime and to release some of the stress of school work. For me, this is a time during the Spring semester when I truly miss my mom, and FaceTime just isn't cutting it. I count down the days and hours until I can see her. Of course the sorority has planned events like a nice sit down banquet, but my mom and I like to explore and make our own fun sometimes. I thought I would give some ideas of how to make moms weekend something you'll always cherish.

Take them out to a nice lunch when they arrive: Start the weekend off right, and sit outside on a patio and enjoy a quaint lunch. Even invite some other friends' moms so they can meet before the festivities start.

Have a small gathering in the hotel or at an apartment: Last year we bought appetizers and drinks and played music and "Heads Up" around the hotel pool area with a few moms and daughters. This was one of my favorite memories because we felt no pressure to be anywhere at a certain time.

Hold a spa day: This year, my sorority rented out a nail salon for a few hours in the afternoon so all of us could spend time in the same space, but you could always do a massage with some of your close friends and moms. Plus many salons will give sororities a discounted rate when there is a large group coming.

Go to happy hour at your favorite bar: Moms love to see the local spots around town, and what better plan than to bar hop for a few hours before dinner plans. This year, Iowa City is doing an annual bar crawl that we plan to be a part of, to our moms a good time.

Treasure the time you have: You only get to experience a few mom's weekends in college, so make every minute count. These weekends are my mom's favorite times of the year. You are very lucky. Be grateful to spend a nice stress free weekend with your best friend.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
