So You Have Writer’s Block? Me Too.
9BRIDGES

My name is Kaitlin and I have a deadline.

Things I’ve done today to try and get my creative juices flowing:

  • Got an Iced Venti Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks to start off my day
  • Went to the beach and took a bunch of photos of myself and my friend
  • Got a sunburn
  • Started to think about an article I could write about the beach
  • Started to write said article:

Title: Life Lessons Learned at the Beach

Subtitle: “…in every grain of sand there is a story of the earth.” – Rachel Carson

If you take the time, really pause and take a moment, there’s a lot that can be learned from the world around us. Earlier today I visited the beach and yes, I did get a sunburn despite applying four coats of sunscreen within a two hour period. While I was baking in the hot Florida sun, I paid close attention to the waves, constantly coming in to the shore and going out, pulling swimmers forward and backward. The clouds in the sky grew from wispy to full and blew along rather quickly. Huh, I thought to myself as I perched up on my elbows, isn’t it funny how the world consists of lessons? All we have to do is pay attention to detail, dig below the surface, and learn.

I then went on to list (with some elaboration of the last couple) certain things at the beach that you could learn lessons from:

  • 1.Lessons learned from clouds
  • 2.Lessons learned from the ocean
  • 3.Lessons learned from sand
  • 4.Lessons learned from shells
  • 5.Lessons learned from beach-goers
    • The beach attracts all kinds of people and this goes to show how diverse this world is.
  • 6.Lessons learned from the birds
    • In the wild, animals typically stick together and birds on the beach often tend to chill in flocks. Nothing is scarier than a group of birds coming at you while you’re snacking on a sandwich and chips. The birds depend on each other for survival, just like many other animals. People need love and they need company.

**DISCLAIMER: Who knows really, this article about life lessons learned from the beach may make a reappearance. Don’t hate.**

Continuing on with my day...

  1. Trashed article (see above)
  2. Went to Chick-fil-A to get a large iced sweet tea (Ever wonder why it’s called Chick-fil-A?)
  3. Ate some Hot Fries (I love Hot Fries)
  4. Applied some aloe on my sunburn
  5. Made two (very sad) bracelets out of twine and random beads
  6. Checked Tinder (I’m on vacation so it’s okay)
  7. Applied some more aloe on my sunburn
  8. Watched New Girl, Friends, parts of Parent Trap, and parts of Freaky Friday
  9. Did I mention I got a really bad sunburn?
  10. Went on a walk around the neighborhood
  11. Aloe time, basically always
  12. Had a mini jam-session in the kitchen to Tori Kelly’s smash hit, “Hollow” (Check it out if you haven’t heard it already)
  13. Started to make some dinner
  14. Tried to forget that I had sunburn
  15. Figured it was about time to write my article
  16. Came up with the idea about writing about writer’s block
  17. Still having a hard time…

I’ve been writing ever since I was young and I’ve been in love with it ever since. Putting your thoughts down on paper (or online appropriately) is a great way to express yourself and yes, the creativeness sometimes fails to emerge. Every writer experiences this at times.

It's difficult to pick just one thing to write about, especially now when so much is going on in the world. Writer’s block isn’t always about not having anything to write about. Sometimes it’s about having too many things to write about and not being able to pick just one topic.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
