If you're anything like me, something so minimal as misplacing your keys can be detrimental to your day. It seems like waves are crashing down on you. You have three exams, a paper, and a homework assignment all before 2 P.M., and somehow miraculously managed to get three hours of sleep last night. Take a deep breath, and read this:
1. You Are Trying Your Best
If you're anything like me, you are your worst critic. There is always a voice in your subconscious saying "You could have tried harder. You did not give it your all." Yet, the six hours in the library would beg to differ. Unless you're not studying, getting drunk every day or purposely not doing anything, you are doing your best. The world works in miraculous ways. Maybe you're not the honors brainiac you were in high school, but hey, college is hard. We all struggle, but we are all making it day by day. Don't give up on your dreams, because you are not seeing the results you expected to see. Though it is not an ideal way of looking at things, C's do get degree's. As long as you're putting in the effort, then you can't punish yourself. Always strive for more, but don't lose yourself in the process. Your grades don't define you. Don't look back on these four years of college, thinking about the tears you've cried over grades that are already said and done when you could have been laughing and spending time with your friends.
2. You Are Beautiful
This is an internal struggle I've had with myself for as long as I can remember. I've always compared myself to everyone -- my best friends or the random girl who sat next to me in class. Why can't I look like that? Why can't I sound like that? Why am I so complicated when everyone seems so simple? I've tried everything from diets to dying my hair, to trying to change who I am to fit into the societal expectations of beauty. But that's not me, and that shouldn't be you. Beauty is not measured by how much you weigh, your hair color or what clothes you have. Beauty is measured by the depth of your heart, your laughter, and your longing presence that all your friends and family crave to be around. It took me a long time to realize that not being a size zero is okay, and it still hits me at times, but once you let go of these conceptions that our society has, you begin to realize that none of this really matters. You are beautiful in the way you walk, the way your soul talks, and the way you get excited about your favorite food. You are more than that.
3. A Bad Moment Does Not Mean a Bad Day, a Bad Day Does Not Mean a Bad Week, and a Bad Week Does Not Mean a Bad Year.
A good friend of mine once told me this and sometimes it's the only thing that gets me through a day. This daily remember just lets me know that bad things will happen, it's inevitable, but you let it chose how it affects you. I've had my fair share of bad luck and I'll openly admit it, I let things get to me. I let things pile up and crash on me, but everything works out, even if it's in baby steps. I think the best way to live a good life, is just to let things go. Laugh, so you don't cry. Chances are anyway, you'll be laughing about it the next day anyway. Why do we let one negative thing turn a good day into a bad day, but not one positive thing make a bad day into a good day? Take things day by day and don't let one negative not make a positive.
4. You Are Loved and You Matter.
I'll admit it, this is something I need to hear often. In a world where some many things happen, you can't help but feel so minimal and insignificant. But the truth is, you are someone's world. You are the least minimal thing to someone. Someone aches for your laugh and craves your hugs. Somewhere, someone is looking at something that reminds them of you. Someone's day would be drastically different if you were not a part of it. Whether it be by a classmate or your best friend, you are needed and you are valued. When the world feels like it's crashing down on you, never forget that. If you weren't here, someone wouldn't have someone to sit next to, someone wouldn't have someone to confide in, someone wouldn't have someone to love. You matter.
5. Time Heals All
I've hated this saying for as long as I remember -- how could something that is ruining me now not matter in a few months? But believe it or not, it is true. The best is yet to come. Right now you might be in the worst part of your life, but who says tomorrow might not lead to the best months of your life? You just have to be there to see it. Don't let something today destroy tomorrow.
6. Everything Happens For a Reason
I often find myself wondering why particular things happen to me. Why can't anything ever go smoothly for me, why can't I be as lucky as the person before me? But as hard as it is to admit, sometimes things happen for a reason, and you won't ever get an explanation. There is a bigger picture and purpose for your life. If you are discouraged because you didn't achieve something you wholeheartedly wanted or your course of path didn't work out. Don't think of it as giving up on something you love, think of it as a way to fulfill a bigger and better purpose. You may not get want you want today, but who says you won't get it tomorrow, or in a few weeks or a year from now. You have to trust this way of life we live in, and believe that there is a higher power out there making everything exactly the way it should be.
I'll fully admit I am a pessimist. I always try to look for the worst out of a situation than looking for the good in it. But with these daily reminders, I am working on my road to positivity. We are all human, we have feelings, things go wrong, but for someone like me, I hope you read this and try to look at things in a new light. The waves may be crashing on you now, but once it goes away, take a look at the ocean- the bigger picture, it's breathtaking and I, myself, can't wait to experience it and all that life truly has to offer and I hope you do, too.
