Silence Does, In Fact, Equal Compliance

If you stand for nothing, then what will you fall for?

When people around you make a bad decision or even a series of bad decisions, what's your first instinct?

If you chose to stand around without saying anything, you will probably seem just as guilty as they do. It's why "guilty by association" is often cause for arrest and why others, despite who you might be personally, judge you based on who you are friends with.

You might think that you would choose to intervene, and I applaud you for that. Considering that we are taught from a young age to intervene, it would make sense that most people would think they would choose to do so.

It's why we teach children that if they see someone being bullied that they should go from being a bystander to an active force of good to end the situation. However, when this translates to real life circumstances, no one seems to want to become that active force of good.

If you were forced to choose between keeping your manager position at Nike, despite knowing it uses sweatshops in poor countries or quitting, what would you choose? If you worked for MAC Cosmetics, would you still continue to work there knowing all of their products are tested on animals and then they kill them once their "job" was done?

That's where it gets tricky.

People often choose to look the other way when the situation benefits or could benefit, themselves. They might even decide that it's not their place to say something for fear of being the odd one out. But if it's not your place and no one else is saying something, whose place is it?

This is why I am leaving Odyssey.

Despite how much I love the people in the Rowan Community, I am choosing to become an active force of good. I am no longer content writing for this company when it promotes hateful and harmful articles written by creators who choose to be bystanders. I love being able to have my own voice, surrounded by hundreds of people who are given a voice, too, but it came to a point where some of those people used their voice to be controversial in hopes of getting paid, despite what they personally believe.

I would rather be voiceless, but happy with who I am than aligning myself with a company and creators who use their voice to be hateful in hopes of compensation.

I am so grateful for my opportunities here, but I can no longer sit here and write knowing others do the same for the wrong reasons.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
