Growing up with your parents is tough. They see things in a completely different light than you'll ever be able to see, but more times than not you end up becoming exactly the kind of person that your parents are. Every household has different ways of bonding, and definitely, no conversations were the same. In my house? Well, it was more common to be talking about the tales and horror stories of the hospital than it was to be making small talk on what went on in town. This is because I grew up with not just one, but two nurses at the head of my house. With that being said, here are the three telltale signs, you grew up in a medical household.
A Strong Stomach
More often than not, the table conversations in my family were firmly surrounded by blood, bodily functions, the occasional throw-up here and there. Having people come over it was hard to re-adjust the usual topics of conversation and going over to other peoples house? Well it took me awhile to figure out that not everyone was discussing horrors of the hospital and human body like my family was. An even weirder concept for me to grasp? Not everyone was as comfortable discussing these topics daily. You wanna watch that Dr. Pimple Popper video on YouTube? Well don't mind me as I enjoy every second with a bowl of popcorn in my hand!
Faking Sick
You can bet your bottom dollar it took a lot more than me spouting, "my head hurts" to get out of school. Unless you were physically throwing up, or bleeding profusely there was no chance you were even stepping foot into a doctor's office let alone missing school. I considered myself lucky just to be able to go to school late! Were your parents have witnessed the worst out there, they know that most of the time fluids and ibuprofen will most likely do the trick.
Family Trips
Going on family trips aren't always going to be about the cool stores and beaches. On a trip to Pennsylvania a couple years back, my parents couldn't wait to get in the Body Museum with us so we could look at all the different exhibits of the human body. Some people use their vacation times to get away from their jobs and daily life. But it seems those in the medical field go searching for more no matter where they are.
Growing up in a family of nurses had its perks and its downfalls. There's no doubt in my mind that if one of my friends cut open their toe and started bleeding profusely, I would definitely be the one with the most calm. I'll always be open to conversations regarding any and every aspect of the human body. And thankfully I'll always have my own at home doctor's office. But, when the day comes where I have kids, I hope they know they'll never be able to get anything past their grandparents.
