Typically, preseason games in the NFL are relatively pointless unless you are trying to earn an NFL roster spot. However, what happened prior to one NFL game has set off many discussions pertaining to racism and the military in America.

After not standing for the National Anthem for a preseason game, San Francisco 49ers quarterback became the league’s most polarizing player for the meaning of his actions. Although Kaepernick said he had great respect for the military, his detractors felt his actions were sickening and disrespectful to those who serve.

Kaepernick’s remarks were met with much negativity, as fans even wished injury on him at his next game. Detractor wanted Kaepernick to donate money to those less fortunate, but one quick Google search shows that he is already a big philanthropist. Just like when asking about black-on-black crime, naysayers wanted to take away from a cause by asking them why they do not also care about this. That cause is well covered, but they are the ones actually not caring and wanted a strawman argument to use. The exact same people that complain about PC culture were so offended that many wished injury upon Kaepernick.

Kaepernick is being denied the right to call for change while Trump's whole campaign is doing just that. Trump supporters are free to list everything wrong with this country, Kaepernick has to shut up or leave for daring to criticize our country. Kaepernick’s pleas for accountability exposed a society where not standing for an anthem is worse than people being killed by the police.

While you may disagree with the way he went about this situation, you have to see things from someone else’s perspective. Just because you may not see an injustice in a situation does not mean that it does not exist. Too often we see a situation and think, “I am not offended,” and conclude that nobody else should be either. Hopefully, this situation helps us gain the ability to view things from other’s perspectives and not just attack their ideas.
