Why We Should Start Being a Little More Thankful for Thanksgiving

Christmas can have an entire month, let's give Thanksgiving a couple days.

Christmas movies, Christmas music, Christmas commercials. At risk of sounding like a grinch, I think we can all agree that November first is a bit too early for all of this. As much as I love the heartwarming story of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and the life lessons that are taught in Frosty the Snowman, I feel as though the leaves should have the chance to change and the temperature should drop a little bit before we dust off the movies where snow covers the ground. Too many people put away their Halloween costumes and pull out their stockings and Christmas trees without giving a second thought to Thanksgiving. Here’s a few reasons why Thanksgiving is a holiday not to be forgotten.

The Food.

This is a given as to why Thanksgiving is a necessity. As a first semester college freshman, I have never been more excited for a home cooked meal, not to mention a huge thanksgiving dinner. The thought of eating something other than the pizza from the dining hall is something that I’ve been seeing in my dreams.

Seeing Family.

Having all my family members in one room is never a dull occasion. Whether we are laughing about old memories or debating about different politics, the entire day is interesting.

Gathering for an Un-materialistic Holiday.

There is no expected gift exchange for thanksgiving. No antagonizing over the perfect gift and the stress of “what if they don’t like it” or “are they pretending they don’t have six of the same thing back home”. For Thanksgiving, the only think you need to bring with you is a dessert or a small dish to add to the meal

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The balloons for this parade are roughly about thirty feet wide, 60 feet long, and at least four stories high. I can’t think of a better way to spend my Thursday morning than watching as up to 90 people cartel these over sized balloons around.

Stuffing.

I am fully aware that I already addressed the important of food on this holiday, but I just wanted to reiterate how excited I am, specifically for the stuffing.

I get it, though. Nothing beats the feeling of setting up the tree and pulling out the ornaments while light Christmas songs play in the background. Christmas music is some of the catchiest lyrics ever created. Everyone loves a good family movie night with the large array of Christmas movies to pick from. These wonderful things would all be so much special if they were limited to the month December instead of half of the year.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
