"You're really going to live together?" This is the question that my best friend and I heard for months leading up to college. When Parker decided to go to LSU, it was already decided that we would live together. We made our Pinterest boards and thought of color schemes, counting down the days. We couldn't wait, but other people had their doubts.
From family members to teachers and friends, almost no one thought it was a good idea. They told us horror stories of best friends whose friendships were ruined by becoming roommates and tried to change our minds; they couldn't.
We talked about every possible issue we could have: joining different sororities, making new friends, even chores. After talking through all the problems that tore other people apart, we became determined to prove everyone wrong.
Being half-way through our Freshmen year, I can honestly say I wouldn't have wanted to live with any one else. Here are just a few reasons you should live with your best friend..
1. Comfort
College is an entirely new experience with new people, so it's comforting to have someone you know and trust just a few feet away. You don't have to feel alone or awkward trying to get to know a roommate you just met.
Whether you're watching TV in different rooms or walking to class together, there's no pressure. You don't have to impress or entertain each other because even silence isn't awkward.
2. Support
In high school, your best friend was the person you called when you had a bad day and just needed to vent. She was the person you called when you wanted to try something, but needed a little support.
College can be scary and hard, but having your best friend with you makes everything a little easier. She can make you feel better after you after you fail that first test or encourage you to ask that guy to your date event.
3. Advice
Living with your best friend means a built-in therapist. When you're upset, all you have to do is crawl in her bed and cry. She knows your past and understands your feelings better than anyone else.
Plus, you're close enough that she can honestly tell you when you should change your outfit or when it's time to hit the gym.
4. Familiar
When you live with your best friend, you already know each other. You know their family, and you understand why they miss home too.
They know that you're not a morning person and that you don't like coffee. You don't have to explain anything or be someone you're not.
5. Judgment
This person has seen you at your best and your worst. They won't judge you when you get home from a night gone wrong or fill them in on some regrettable choices you made that weekend. They understand you, and they forgive you.
Beyond all these reasons, it's just fun. College is an amazing time, and I'm so lucky to get to share it with my best friend.
We joined different sororities and made new friends, but I always look forward to catching up over late night toast. Having her with me has made college feel like home, and I couldn't ask for a better roommate or best friend.
