Shopping for Your First Apartment

While on a college student budget

Shopping for Your First Apartment
Trend Decoration

I finally signed the lease for my very first apartment, so I wanted to take my time and decorate it to make sure that it looks like a humble abode instead of another college kid's apartment. But then I remembered how much money I had and my mother made it clear by saying to me, "You can't live like a Kardashian on a Food Lion salary."

I totally forgot that when I was looking at lavish beds with mirrored accents and jeweled buttons on the headboard, that I needed to be more realistic. Did I really need a mirrored headboard for my first apartment? No, but that didn't mean I had to live shabby, either. So I did my research and found many websites and stores that had furniture as well as decorations, that were stylish and modern, but were also affordable. Here are some places I used while apartment shopping on a college student budget and hopefully they can help you, too:

Wayfair.com

I was a little skeptical to use this website at first, but after reading tons of good reviews, I decided to take a chance and order something from it. I was looking everywhere for beds but I could not find the bed I wanted until I looked on this website. I found one on Wayfair and it was perfect! The bed was originally $232.45, but I received it for $209.20 with a coupon code. They shipped it for free within two weeks, and what I saw on the site was exactly what I received.

Ikea

I know that many students have heard about Ikea, but I want to reiterate the magnificence of this store. They have many of the basic essentials you'll need, along with decorations, for a low price. From kitchen supplies, to bathroom decorations, to mirrors, the store has it all.

TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Home Goods

These stores are perfect to find designer house items for a reasonable cost. Higher quality items are also at these department stores. TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Home Goods are filled with stylish decor and appliances that you may find suitable for your new place. Check them out!

Family

You never know what they may have hiding in their basement or garage. Several of my family members recently moved into new homes and told me not to buy anything until I looked through what they had to offer. The majority of the items that they had were brand new. The items included a variety of things such as Keurig coffee machines and waffle makers. Check with your family members to see if they have anything you may need before you go out and buy it. Also, think about having a housewarming party. People, especially family, don't mind helping you out with your first apartment.

When apartment shopping, always remember that it is completely fine to be on a budget! As college students, many of us do not have the money to spend thousands of dollars on furniture and decorations. And that does not have to happen in order for your home to look nice. If you use the aforementioned stores and websites, you will be just fine. Happy apartment shopping!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
