Sharpie a Car For a Good Cause

On Wednesday March 18, the brothers of Kappa Alpha Order worked together to raise money for our national Philanthropy, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). This event took place in front of Hepner Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the support we received from Aztecs at SDSU was heartwarming and great. The idea of "Sharpie a Car for MDA" came to us last year when we were planning our first philanthropic event since our return to San Diego State. Brother Jacob Handler brought the idea to us and he even allowed us to use his car.

We thought that the concept of our event was simple and innovative so we thought we'd do it again. We had never seen anything like this done at SDSU and we thought it would be great to give it another try. This year we brought more to the table. We reached out to our local MDA office and told them about the event. They provided us with shamrock cut outs and MDA shamrock pins in celebration of St. Paddy's day. Brothers spent the whole day before screen printing t-shirts and getting thing prepared for Wednesday.

In order to increase our fundraising, we gave out shamrock cut outs to individuals that donated $1 or $5. We also gave out pins to people that made a $2 contribution, and t-shirts to those that donated $10 or more. We decided to make a competition between all sororities. The sorority with the highest donation collectively won custom Greek letters made by our chapter members. Last year, Jenna Linehan from Delta Gamma was the individual with the highest contribution and the ladies of Delta Zeta were the top fundraising chapter. Overall, our chapter raised a little over $500, last year.

This year, our efforts and hard work was shown through the amount of support and money we raised. We were proud when we had the final count and raised just under $2,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We tripled the amount of money raised last year and we could not be any prouder. The ladies of Delta Zeta were once again the chapter with the most fundraising contributions.

We would like to thank everyone that came out to support Kappa Alpha Order and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We would also like to send a special thank you to our KA Rose, Lisa Williams (DZ), Allyson Mucha (DZ), Jessica Wheeles (KD), Tessa Robertson (KD), and Heather Bateman (AGD) for helping us out with the execution of our event.

Through all our philanthropic endeavors this semester, Kappa Alpha Order raised about $4,000 for various organizations including Rady Children's Hospital, MDA, Traveling Stories, and more.

We cannot wait to see what more we do as an individual chapter and as a Greek community. It is important that we continue to support one another and show the University how Greek life is making great things happen.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
