Applying to college was definitely the most stressful and meaningless process I have ever gone through. I thought every little thing I did mattered and drove myself insane. Senior year, I was so set on getting into my "dream school," and I am now so thankful I am here at Michigan. I tried to perfect everything I did, even my physical education grade. I will never forget when I received a 3.3 in gym first semester of senior year, which was the first time I had received a grade lower than an A on my report card. (College changes this, trust me. Don't take A's for granted.) I cried and thought I wasn't going to get into college. Looking back at how ridiculous this whole process is, here is my advice to you anxious senior:
1. Do NOT go on college confidential
This website is the most misleading page on the internet. No high school senior knows how to "chance you!" The whole process is BS, so don't get yourself worked up when you see the girl with a 4.0 and a 36 on her ACT asking if she will get into her dream school.
2. Do NOT choose safety schools that you wouldn't go to
If worse comes to worse, you still want to have a rewarding, rigorous, and fun experience in college. Choose places that seem like a good fit.
3. Do NOT compare yourself to other students at your high school
I did this way too much. You have no way of knowing what will happen, so just worry about yourself.
4. Do NOT lurk on Facebook after you got rejected from a school
It just does not feel good seeing all of the congratulations and "Next four!" after you got rejected. Do a favor for yourself.
5. Do NOT check the applicant portal everyday
This will just make you more anxious.
6. Do NOT only focus on your grades
You have done everything you could do and you are worth so much more than just a number
7. Do NOT NOT have fun
It's second semester senior year! Enjoy the time you have left with your friends and try to distract yourself.
