In a time full of division, protest, and what seems to be doom and gloom, we’re in dire need of some good news. It’s nothing anymore to turn on the news and get depressed about the state of society. So, instead of thinking that we’ve done ourselves in, here are seven topics of good news to restore your faith in humanity.

1. 90 new homeless shelters are being built in New York City.

2. Lead amounts in the water in Flint, Michigan, have decreased.

3. The drought in California is ending.

4. 6,000 turtles have been saved in a wildlife bust.

6. A cop has applied to be a veteran’s legal guardian.

7. Ellen surprised a graduating class with free scholarships.

The famous and dearly loved talk show host surprised the 41 graduation students from the Summit Academy of Brooklyn with free college scholarships. After having two teachers from the school on her show, she partnered with Walmart and presented a $25,000 check to the school, whose mission is to help educate the community and lower poverty rates, to be used as college scholarships for those graduating. Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine.
