Seven Holidays You Didn't Know About

Oh, and how interesting they are!

Okay, so I was editing articles and found a tag that said "International Mud Day." After contemplating my life's existence, I decided to look up some holidays and share them with y'all! You either never heard of them before, or weren't aware! The complete list is here.

Bubble Bath Day (January 8)

I think this should be celebrated nationally. Who doesn't enjoy a warm and fun bath time to chill and pamper yourself? I think it's one of those holidays reminding us to take care of ourselves. It can be better with friends and some bubbly drinks.

National Nothing Day (January 16)

So, me everyday? Just kidding. But, what this actually means is that Americans spend the day without celebrating any holiday. No honoring, no observance, nothing. Contrary to the name, it is NOT a national holiday and was proposed by columnist Harold Pullman Coffin in 1972. He even made a foundation for it!

Also, because of MLK Day, it has a one in seven chance of actually occurring every year. How about that! I still like what it implies initially.

National Frozen Foods Day (March 6)

Not those Salisbury steak meals you pop in the microwave! This is referring to flash freezing your food, like putting meat, veggies or fruit in the freezer so it doesn't go bad. President Ronald Reagen signed this holiday into national status in 1984.

But, if you want to celebrate Hot Pockets or Eggo waffles...

International Mud Day (June 29)

Ahhh, the holiday that inspired this article. Actually, this is similar to Earth Day. People come together to get dirty and celebrate the beauty of nature. While this is aimed at children to learn nature appreciation, adults can participate as well! You can make mud cakes and sculptures, sounds cool!

This holiday originated from an Australian and a Nepalian collaborating on how to bring nature appreciation to communities. Funny how this occurs a week after my birthday...

Have a Bad Day Day (November 19)

But aren't those Mondays? Now, this is not what you think. Have a Bad Day... Day (how redundant) is actually a sarcastic holiday. You tell people you come across with a cheery expression and a pleasant smile "Have a bad day!"

This originated from workers in the service industry who deal with those types of customers every day. Instead of giving the robotic "Have a good day," you bless customers with confusion as you deliver the opposite.

Sounds great in theory, and I would try this, but I don't want to lose my job.

Day of the Ninja / International Ninja Day (December 5)

I was so disappointed in myself that I missed this. I. LOVE. NINJAS. This day is a tribute to the badasses that has lurked in entertainment media for decades. (Fangirl moment: Genji, I love you~)

A little history about ninjas: they were average Joes that utilized agricultural tools to do their assassination jobs (e.g. sickles, kunai knives). Of course, when some of us think ninjas, we think black-clad, karate-using badasses or... "Naruto." They are represented in different ways throughout media, particularly video games, they are a staple in pop culture.

Also, Happy belated Ninja Day, Ninja blenders.

Make Up Your Mind Day (December 31)

For the indecisive (like me)! I liked how the website I keep using described it: "No excuses, no procrastination, no ands, ifs or buts—this day is your chance to stop putting things off for fear of responsibility and get things done." Preach.

This is also aimed at those who are making New Years' Eve resolutions. It's encouraging because you are setting yourself up on the right foot as you go into the new year!

Honorable Mention: National Opposite Day (January 25)

Well, 2016 isn't over yet, so besides Christmas, Hannukah, and Kwanzaa, don't forget your weird holidays!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Here's a personal archive of a few of the things I learned after going away for the first time.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
