Separation Stages from Your College BFFs

It's not goodbye, it's a see you later...

Separation Stages from Your College BFFs
LA Times

In high school, the end of the year means summer and bliss. In college, it still means summer is coming, but it also means you're beginning four months away from your best friends. Whether you're a few hours away or a few thousand miles, they're way farther than across the hall. Coping with this separation will be different for every group of friends, but here are a few stages we all go through:

1. Denial

We'll be fine, I mean we did just fine over breaks. Right? It can't be that much different. Besides, it'll be so nice to be home. No biggie guys...

2. Realization

Wait... I won't see you for breakfast everyday and be able to tell you about my dream with the hot guy from chem. And you won't be there at midnight when I want ice cream. Who will binge watch High School Musical with me on the weekend? NO THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING.

3. Sentimental

Realizing how much you're going to miss the little things will make you overly sentimental about all the time you've had together. Not saying this hasn't been the best time of your life, but you'll get overly sentimental about your last coffee date and your last night in your dorm. You'll feel all the feelings you try to avoid.

4. Hugs

While this could go under sentimental, I feel like this stage is so prevalent it deserves its own category. You will hug everyone an excessive amount of times. It's ridiculous.

5. Goodbye

Saying goodbye is weird because you definitely won't realize how long it'll be until you see your friends again. You've said "bye" a hundred times this semester, but you always see them again the next day and this time you won't. But I can assure you, you will not fully realize this until much later.

But fear not my friends. The pining you feel to be with your friends will be mutual, and will cause endless snaps and texts daily in an attempt to keep connected. Your planning skills will also improve incredibly as you make plans to meet up with your friends over the summer. And when you all come back in fall, the joy will be contagious.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
