Second Graders, As Told By "SpongeBob" Characters

I recently got a job at a summer camp watching over second graders. The more time I spent with them, the more I realized that they're just as goofy and fun as many of the characters in Spongebob.

SpongeBob SquarePants.

SpongeBob represents the second grader who can’t sit still. They make the most of walking from one place to another by chanting, or dancing, or bouncing off the walls. However, SpongeBob is always trying to figure things out, and that can turn into something great in the future.

Patrick Star.

Patrick represents the second grader who has tons of ideas, but never follows through with them, or gets in trouble because of them. Whether it’s inventing new games, changing rules in the middle of a game, or suggesting that the class should follow his/her example in something, second graders embody Patrick’s creativity, and liveliness.

Gary.

Gary represents the second grader who's kind of quiet, and forgotten. They tend to sit in the back of the room, but when they do come and join in the fun, everyone notices their loyalty, and support for their friends.

Sandy Cheeks.

Sandy represents the second grader who can’t sit still. They’re the fast ones in gym, and usually the winners of any game. They enjoy testing themselves, but also love the limelight and attention that comes with success.

Squidward Tentacles.

Squidward represents the drama queen type of second grader who always participates in group activities, but is frequently bored by them. They feel obligated to join in on the experiences, but can sometimes bring down everyone with their ill-temper. These kids tend to be the tattle-tales, and occasionally bend the rules in organized activity.

Mr. Krabs.

Mr. Krabs represents the controlling second grader. While maybe not as severe as Mr. Krabs’ controlling tendencies, this type of kid picks what game will be played. If you disagree then you don’t have to participate, resulting in eventually everyone agreeing, and satisfying the controlling one. If things don't go their way, they usually get uncontrollably angry.

Sheldon J. Plankton.

Plankton represents the determined second grader. This kid will stop at nothing to prove him/herself. They want to be the best, but are not deterred if they end up second best. This trait of determination isn’t good in Plankton’s case, but in second graders, it could lead to good things.

Fred Rechid (“my leg!” guy).

Fred represents the second grader who always gets hurt. It could be the smallest thing, and they’ll demand to go to the nurse’s office. They make sure that everyone knows they’ve been hurt by screaming the body part like Fred does.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
