Seasonal depression, also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), is a mood disorder characterized by depression that occurs at the same time every year. With the combination of daylight savings, freezing weather and delicious holiday food, the same annual tendencies begin to occur. Here are some ways to beat the inevitable lack of motivation, laziness and pigging out that the winter seasons bring.
1. Exercise (weight gain is common)
With all the food that the holidays have to offer and the fact that the cold and dark outdoors keep us inside, it's hard to stay in shape. This is why getting yourself off the comfy couch and into the gym is so important.
2. Try light therapy
This technique is useful because it affects the brain chemicals that are linked to mood, therefore, helping the seasonal depression symptoms. An example of this is a light box, which mimics natural outdoor light without the harmful UV rays.
3. Eat healthy (people tend to crave more carbs)
Personally, this is the hardest task for me to accomplish during the holidays and freezing months because I LOVE FOOD. Exercise can only get you so far, so what we need to remember is that fruits and vegetables are delicious too!
4. Take vitamins (especially vitamin D)
When the sun isn't shining and you need a little extra help, a vitamin D supplement is the next best thing!
5. Stick to a routine and keep busy
The laziness and lack of motivation start to kick in during these long and cold months. This is why keeping your day moving and staying focused on what's really important in life is crucial.
6. Go outside during the daylight hours
Daylight savings can be a bitch. Whenever those rays of sunshine are shining through, making the effort to go outside can help lighten our day up physically and mentally.
7. Be social
Even after the holidays when we visit with our family and friends the most, it is still important to make the effort to laugh and enjoy each other's company.
8. When you see an animal PET IT
Pets, especially dogs, love to be paid attention to. They are happy and at ease, which in turn causes us to be happy and at ease as well.
9. Think and speak positively
Positive thoughts during a hard day when your seasonal depression is getting the best of you can give you an extra boost. It's the easiest task that you can do, and it can make your day that much better!
