The Rio Olympics has been inspirational. Olympians from all over the world have trained for years for this moment, and watching them hustle through their events has been encouraging. Sure, we are no Olympians; we are mere college students, but that does not mean we cannot learn a lesson or two from these extraordinary and hardworking men and women. The beauty of the Olympics is that it brings countries from all over the world together, it provides an excess amount of patriotism and gives civilians the opportunity of greatness that is the human race. Let these Rio Olympics be a lesson to us all; here are the top five that I have learned thus far.
1. Representation matters
When I first saw Laurie Hernandez in the United States gymnastics team, I could not have been prouder to see a young Latina girl following her dreams. Throughout the whole Olympics, I have made it paramount to watch the gymnastics section with my little cousins so they could see what they could accomplish if they put their mind into it. But it is not just the gymnastics team; diversity is a key factor in this year's Olympic teams — from Simone Manuel (women's swimming team) to Morolake Akinosun (women's track and field).
2. Hard work does pay off.
You do not just get to the Olympics by knowing a few people and good luck. You have to train 24/7. You have to dedicate your life to the sport, and you have to love it. I believe hard work derives from passion; inside of you there must be a source that keeps you going. All the hours you put into a textbook will pay off.
3. Life is a team effort.
You cannot go through life alone. There are people all around that care for you and want the best. Having your independence does not mean you cannot depend on other people. You will get further in life when you learn to trust others. Take advice from those that have been through the same struggle.
4. Surround yourself with people who will make you stronger.
If there is a person in your life who does not make you a better and stronger person, kick them out! You do not need anyone holding you back. Do not stay still. Go for all the things you want in this world. Do not be a dreamer; be a doer. Olympians have trainers who want the best for them and train them to be it.
5. Never give up.
No athlete would ever believe they would get to the Olympics. The Olympics are the pinnacle of these athletes' lives; it is what they have trained for, but not everyone makes it. Many try out for many years and do not make it, but they keep on training. Age is not just a number for many of the sports, so the clock is ticking, but that does not stop them. You can never give up when things get hard, when everything is telling you to run the other way. Stay put and just work harder.
We may not be Olympians, but that does not mean we cannot learn a thing or two from them. They are role models to follow for their perseverance and dedication. Go Team USA!
