As I’m sure you all know, Freddy’s Steakburgers is open for business. My best friend and I decided to try it out and give it our honest review. We decided to go on a Tuesday around 2 in the afternoon. Since we both worked in fast food, we knew not to go during peak hours, because a huge rush of people can cause the quality to slip a little.
The restaurant itself was extremely clean and appealing to the eye, it really felt like walking into a diner in the 70’s or 80’s. We studied the menu and asked the cashier questions, which she was really helpful in answering. The service here is awesome, so kudos to you Mr. Freddy. We decided to try the fried pickles, because, I mean, fried pickles are our thing. I ordered fish and chips, subbing onion rings in for the chips because the cashier raved about the onion rings. My friend got a hot dog and fries, and we both got frozen custard “on hold” to complete the experience. Together, our meals totaled $28.28, so be prepared to spend a bit of money if you decide to try it out.
All in all, I have to say I was really disappointed with the quality of the food we received.
The coating on the fried pickles was so thick that you really couldn’t taste the pickles at all. They were also burnt. The fish was definitely the best thing I ate, and it was mediocre at best. It lacked flavor and was much greasier than it should have been. The onion rings were also on the burnt side, but they were edible.
As for my friend, well, she loved that her hot dog bun was actually garlic toast. It gave it a different spin than other places. Something else that’s cool about the hot dogs is that you can add toppings, so she had pickles and mustard on her hot dog. The pickles were the long slices, instead of the chips, which made for a much more satisfying bite. She also had fries, and they were decent. It really is hard to mess up fries, though.
After we finished our food, we went back up to pick up our custard. The one thing that I really liked about Freddy’s was that you can order your ice cream with your meal and place it “on hold” so it doesn’t melt while you’re eating.
So, one mint oreo concrete (basically a blizzard) and one cup of vanilla custard with cheesecake later, I was once again disappointed.
I grew up on New York custard, so I had really high expectations. It definitely lacked the creaminess that custard is supposed to have. It also had a sort of Splenda aftertaste to it, which I definitely did not like. The concrete was extremely small and had all of the mint at the bottom. It was supposed to be blended, but the top was pure vanilla custard and the bottom was pure mint syrup with a few oreo crumbs thrown in for decoration.
All in all, I do not plan on going back. The atmosphere may be awesome, but the food was not.
Sorry Mr. Freddy.
