I heard about this video called "Dear Fat People" by Nicole Arbour, and I just felt inclined to give my take on the whole situation.
Here is the original video if you haven't seen it:
This video was filled with hate that centered around body shaming overweight individuals, supposedly in the name of "comedy." I don't want to dwell on what was said. I just want to get a message of positivity out there.
Your weight does not define you. What defines you is what kind of person you are; how you treat other people and how you treat your self.
Yes. Obesity is a HUGE problem in this world, but that does not give someone like Nicole Arbour a right to call out these people and talk about them as if they are nothing but a speck of dirt on the ground. Odds are, a person who is overweight...already freaking knows that they are overweight. Society makes sure of that.
I myself have talked about my struggle with an anorexia over the past two years, and as I am in recovery, I am classified as overweight. Guess what?! I can't do ANYTHING about it. I eat very healthy and do daily exercise, but my body is still bigger than what it needs to be. I have realized that I used and abused my body for so long that it has to have some time to heal. And if that means I have to be a bit of a chunky monkey right now--so be it. And I know for sure that there are other people in my situation. There are also countless other people are are overweight/obese because of thyroid issues or some other form of toxin in the body that keeps them from losing weight easily.
On the other side of the spectrum...there are a big majority of people who are just lazy and love to eat. And you know what I say to that?
WHO THE HELL AM I TO JUDGE WHAT SOMEONE ELSE IS DOING WITH THEIR LIFE? It's their life. They can do what they want. They themselves can chose to lead a healthier lifestyle...or they cannot. It's not my or any one other person's decision.
My final point being, instead of focusing on people's outward appearance and how much excess weight they have on their thighs, stomach, arms, or face, why don't we try to preach self love? SELF LOVE IS THE KEY TO A HAPPY AND HEALTHY LIFE. Instead of shaming someone for their outward appearance, let's make videos/blog posts/whatever is necessary to help people to love who they are no matter what size they may be. Because, after all, if you are happy on the inside, it will show on the outside.
Here's my video response:
