5 Reasons WWC Women's Soccer Has Changed My Life

I came to Wilson from a small town in Minnesota. I did not know what to expect. I was scared for my life. The first day I moved in was the first time I had met anyone from the team in person. The first day, I did not realize how lucky I was.

Here are the reasons why:

1. As a high school soccer player, I was never the star player. I tried my hardest, but I was never the best. I played defense. I did not have stats. I did not score goals. Coming into this team made me realize how none of that really mattered. No matter what skill level you are, if you try, you can play. Whether coming off the bench or cheering on teammates while playing, you are a part of a whole. Warren Wilson Women's Soccer made me realize that no matter how small the role, you have the power to be an inspiration to anyone. Being on this team, even as a first year, has taught me ways to have confidence, work hard and be a supportive team player.

2. Anyone who goes to Warren Wilson will understand that athletics are not a high priority. No matter how successful your team may be, there will still be low numbers in the stands. It has been difficult when you feel like your sport is not appreciated, and I know that all of the other student athletes will understand that when I say low numbers, I mean it. We work hard without anyone looking and apart from doing the Triad, student athletes have one more section on their plate: their commitment to the team. When no one is supporting you, it is hard to push through. Being on this team has taught me that no matter what crew you are on or classes you are in, someone will always be rooting for you. If you want something in life, or even at Wilson, you have to put the time in. If you put yourself out there with full effort, no matter the support, the team will always have your back.

3. A third reason this team has made my life at Wilson amazing is the people. The coaches are powerful in their everyday work, and I know that they work hard to make the team dynamic strong. The girls on this team are f*cking talented. We have personal trainers, dancers, singers, ax throwers and activists. This community of players has already taught me about myself. This team is awesome. This team is one of my favorite parts of this school.

4. I will keep number four short and sweet. This team has helped my transition into college tremendously easy. Being a thousand miles away from home, I have already found a community that is like a second family.

5. Lastly, I have learned that being yourself is important. I like being silly. I like acting as if I am five years old again. It is important when you are going from one thing to another to have fun and be positive. It is good to laugh and be mindful, because when you are working 15 hours a week, going to class, doing service, and so much more, sometimes you forget what is important. Life is about the people you share it with. Life is about the laughter, tears and sweat you share with others. It is about the people.

On that note, I just want everyone to realize that no matter how small the school, how competitive the sport, how hard you work, the support from a community is important. The WWC Women's Soccer Team, like any other crew or sports team, is one of many ways Wilson is unique. This school has taught me a lot already, and I am truly grateful I have had the opportunity to "kick" it with a handful of you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
