Hi Morgan,
After reading (then rereading) what you wrote, I felt the need to write a rebuttal for the article you posted earlier this month on your reasons to vote for Donald Trump. Not to argue against your decision to vote for Trump, but to bring into question the validity of the support you used to reinforce it. In hopes that either you change your vote for the next POTUS or at least find more substantial evidence in support of Donald Trump becoming the next leader of the free world.
1. Free college will never work.
You talk of how many of your peers support Bernie Sanders because of his support for free college and no student loans. You then argue that though other countries have free college, it isn’t free; tax payers will inevitably be paying for the costs. You agree with Donald Trump that, to quote you, “It's OK for me to pay for my own college. The harder I work, the more affordable my tuition becomes.”
My rebuttal:
Bernie Sanders supports making college free at public universities and colleges, not all colleges. If a student decided to go to a private school, they would still have to pay tuition, but for those who attended a public institution, as many disadvantaged students like myself do, it would be free. He also supports cutting student loans interest rates to help make them easier to pay off, not eliminating them entirely, which would probably be impossible to do.
However, Sanders is not the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton is--and what she thinks on this matters. She shares similar views of what college should be in America. By 2021 under Hillary's plan, any student whose parents make $85,000 a year or less will be able to attend an in-state college/university without paying tuition. A reasonable plan if you take into account that the average college tuition at the moment is close to $10,000 a year if you're an in-state student and the price has started on a rise upward for the last 30 years, and there doesn’t seem to be a stop in sight.
How will it be paid for? "This plan will be fully paid for by limiting certain tax expenditures for high-income taxpayers.” Similar to how Sanders outlined his plan to fund free college, though with more jargon. Taxing those who make the most and therefore can give away more easily with less detriment to themselves.
As for the money being tax payers money, I have one question for you. Do you support public elementary and high schools? They too are paid for by tax money because they, as college has started to be perceived in society’s eyes over the last few years, are crucial part in the average american having a decent lifestyle .
To address what you said about paying for your own college, you statistically wouldn’t be able to afford to do so without your grades dropping dramatically or you having to enroll for semester’s in spurts. From personal experience, it sucks and is an unrealistic goal to aspire to achieve.
2. The American Dream Will Stay Alive?
You talk of James Truslow Adams interpretation of the American dream; how life should be better and fuller respective to a person's ability and achievement. Arguing, we are migrating into a world where everyone wins a participation ribbon, and Trump is against all of this, he has succeeded in life through ability and achievement and will make sure others in America continue to do so in the future.
My Rebuttal:
Donald Trump started out as a millionaire. His father was a real estate tycoon! I will concede that we live in a time where everyone is given a consolation prize and made to feel like a winner. Still, Donald Trump could hardly be seen as the model for you only deserve what you work for. By his last name alone ipso facto Trump had achievement and power behind him. The only thing Trump would potentially keep alive if elected into office is privilege for people like himself.
3. Trump Is Very Accomplished?
...
My Rebuttal:
I won't argue this in the spirit of being redundant, please read the previous paragraph.
4. He Isn’t A Politician?
You argue that Trump is good because America is tired of lying and scheming politicians, Trump has “real plans,” and will actually change things in the white house for the better
My Rebuttal:
It's insinuated in your argument that Trump is better than other politicians because he speaks his mind and is so honest, I would disagree. Trump has spewed out inexcusable, irrational sayings that in no way can be sat next to the truth and be considered the same. “Somebody's doing the raping, who’s doing the raping,” to quote Trump defending his stance on Mexicans being rapists.
5. He’s Confident?
You said he stands for what he believes in.
My Rebuttal:
There's nothing to refute, I am however concerned in his beliefs.
6. His Immigration Policy Just Makes Sense?
You argue that he doesn’t have problems with legal immigrants, your support being that his wife is one. Then talk of his justified distaste towards illegal immigrants due to the “nightmare,” and how he has good plans to stop them.
My Rebuttal:
Immigrants from Mexico have not caused an economic crisis in America, they are not taking the most influential and coveted jobs in the land. in reality they tenaciously go after the least wanted and desired jobs for wages, more times than not extremely below minimum wage. It’s more than an exaggeration to call their presence in America a nightmare. A slippery slope we could go down with a president who didn’t feel to help people in need from other nations. America is one of the strongest and largest countries in the world and has a very low resettlement rate as it is for refugees compared to countries like Germany. From looking at Trumps views on immigration, can you imagine his stance on taking in more syrian refugees, something he’d have a big say on if elected in office.
7. He's Self-Funded?
You argue that Trump can’t be corrupted because he is self-funded, he doesn’t owe anyone favor that could dictate his decisions as POTUS.
My Rebuttal:
There has been serious doubt over whether Trump is actually as self funded as he says he is. He has even made statements going against what he promised in the past. “I will make a decision fairly soon as to that. I mean, do I want to sell a couple of buildings and self-fund? I don’t know that I want to do that necessarily, but I really won’t be asking for money for myself, I’ll be asking money for the party.” Trump has taken loans and money from Super PACS so it would seem slightly untrue to say he is self funded.
8. Hillary And Bernie Just Aren’t The Right People For The Job?
You talk of how Hillary is seen as a liar by many Americans and insinuated Bernie as a socialist, something “America should stay far away from.”
My Rebuttal:
If being seen as a liar and untruthful is cause for distrust towards a candidate, as I too believe it is. I can not ascertain to why one would having feelings of distrust when speaking of Trump. He has had a far from scrupulous record of telling the truth and the many scandals that involve are proof of it.
As for Bernie having socialistic intentions, socialism has a larger than life dark connotation. Would you stop public schooling or free lunches to those who can’t afford it? What is wrong with helping those who are actively trying to help and better themselves?
9. He'll Balance The Supreme Court?
You talk of how the next president will have to appoint new judges and if either Bernie of Hilary get into office they will make the Supreme Court extremely liberal and unbalanced
My Rebuttal:
There is nothing to argue, in the next President's term, it is more than likely that two Supreme Court justices will retire and it will be up to the POTUS to replace them. However I do disagree that Trump is the man for the job, does he have the background, experience and knowledge to appoint someone that will help interpret the nation's laws for the generations that come after us?
IN CONCLUSION:
There are many holes in the support for your vote of Donald Trump. It may be there is infallible support for Trump becoming the next POTUS, though nothing he has done or said convinces me that. I challenge you and anyone else who will read this to check you credulity when putting support behind a candidate. Don't be naive and believe everything they say, because it may not be true.
America has never stopped being great, help make it greater. YEAZY 2020.
