We all know that you learn a lot when you go away to college. You learn about yourself, your likes and dislikes, what you want to do in your career, you make friends, you study abroad and learn about other cultures. These things are great--but they're obvious. Everyone tells you that this is what you should get out of your college experience. I agree with all of that, but I think there are many other lessons you learn at college that no one talks about. Some of them are comical..but some are much deeper. Below is a list of the lessons I have learned so far, as a second year college student.

1. Cleaning the fridge was never a relevant chore

But it will become relevant in college

2. What you have heard about one red shirt ruining all of your clothes in the laundry....

it's not a myth--it's very true.

3. Your shampoo and conditioner seem to diminish much more quickly since you went away to school...

because your mom stops replacing them

4. Microwave-safe bowls are a thing

And they're pretty important

5. It's perfectly okay to eat alone

Even though you probably never did in high school

6. Frat parties are so gross and everyone knows it

But you will go anyway just to experience it

7. Don't bother spending hundreds on dorm decor...

because it only matters for the first month of college

8. You've probably been taking the comforts of home for granted for your entire life...

like a private bathroom, your own room, your own bed, water that doesn't come from a fountain, home cooked meals, privacy...I could go on for years

9. College isn't always about finding out what you like...

It's about finding out what you don't like as well. For example, if you take engineering classes, and you're not meant to be an engineer...yes--you will probably be miserable. But this misery serves a purpose--it teaches you that engineering is not your calling. In doing so, it helps bring you one step closer to what your calling actually is.

10. You will truly learn the meaning of the saying “The grass is greener on the other side”

As you sit in your dorm and you scroll through Instagram, the grass will always seem greener at other colleges. But you will eventually realize that the grass is not always greener on the other side...its green where you water it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
