A Quick Letter To My Future Self

A quick letter to my future self...

I know you will grow so…

I hope that you are influential in the manner in which you think. I hope you are calm in your thoughts, behaviors, actions, words and composure. I hope you do not let silly little people’s silly little opinions get into your head. I hope you know how to keep yourself at a calm, cool, and collected state when things start to not go so smoothly. I hope you become more active in social justice matters. I hope that you care less, think way less, and live freely. Just be patient, grateful, kind, and loving and everything else will fall in place. Do not stress, use anger, hatred because not only are those bad for your heart, but poisonous in your life. Letting go of people will never be easy, but I hope you maintain the courage to walk away from someone who only brings you negativity. I hope you dare to try to choose spontaneous adventures over well-known comfort.

I hope you continue meditating, smiling, finding happiness in small things, feeling every second, and being thankful for those around you. I hope you lose your sense of regret and guilt and stop beating yourself up over small things. I hope you gain a sense of clarity about whom you are and what you want to be doing and if you are not doing it, make time for it. I hope you have finished the fourth Harry Potter book by now; it has been way too long. I hope you have a sense of security about where you are along your path and excitement about journeys to come. I hope you still strive to make other people happy, as a living and a choice of how you live. I hope you exert more energy to be selfless. I hope you love with your whole heart. I hope you inspire people to use love and not hate.

You will never be the expert of anyone else, all you have to be is the expert of yourself. If you do not like something about yourself either change it to be what you want it to be or love it and accept it anyway. I hope you find the power to continue to motivate yourself. I hope you still try to make people laugh. I hope you still enjoy and take time to feel the sand on the beach and listen to the waves crashing and look forward to every sunset.

I hope you are content in your current place and excited about new things. I hope you feel proud of yourself for whatever you have done. I hope you still look forward to the same moments that make you happy and find new moments of joy.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
