Most of us are guilty of pulling an all nighter for at least once in our lives, but for some of us (especially students) or people who just have trouble sleeping there are serious risks to consider. So here are some ideas to consider before you the next time you decide to stay up all night:
1. You should never stay up extra late, or all night to study for an exam, because not having sleep will actually impair your memory and you will find it really difficult to remember any new or old information you have learned.
2. Not getting enough sleep also greatly effects your concentration ability and reaction times. If you want to be able to focus on that test or drive safely, you definitely need to get a good amount of sleep.
3. Scientists from Stanford and the University of Wisconsin have discovered that even after one night of not sleeping the body's mass index increases. People without sleep are hungrier, have more cravings, and are more likely to gain weight.
4. According to the American Diabetes Association continued sleep deprivation can put you at risk for diabetes. I don't know about you, but that doesn't seem worth it to me.
5. Lack of sleep makes it harder for your body to fight off even minor infections. So it will be easier for you to get sick, and you will be sick for much longer than someone who gets a healthy amount of sleep. Not only that but research shows that lack of sleep scan even lower the effectiveness of vaccines.
There are so many other ways that lack of sleep effects our bodies, these were just the ones I thought were the most important. I should probably take my own advice and get some sleep, sweet dreams!
