A Puerto Rican In Texas

Slowly but surely understanding the culture of this great state.

Moving from a small island like Puerto Rico gives you a different perspective. For example, anything an hour away would not be considered "too far." But when I moved to Texas many ideas like that changed.

There were many aspects about Texas and it's culture that I did not understand until I lived there for over a year.

1. Everything is BIGGER in Texas

Specifically the state itself.

All the way to the thickness of the toast.

2. You Don't Mess with Texans

But really though...

3. The love for the Cowboys

It's a big deal here. Coming from Puerto Rico where they do not play football this was very surprising for me.

4. In-state NBA Rivalry

Now, I'm conflicted because I live in the city of Spurs but JJ Barea is Puerto Rican and plays for the Mavericks.

5. UT Longhorns vs. Texas A&M Aggies

I am still surprised how intense this rivalry gets. I guess I'm not a football fan.

6. You have to stop and love Buc-Ee's

Not in a million years. Everything is bigger in Texas and this gas station and convenience store are no exception. You HAVE to stop there on your road-trip.
Yes, it's true. It does have the cleanest bathrooms.

7.Tex-Mex for every type of meal

It's not Mexican food and never say that it is. However, Texas does embrace many Mexican traditions as part of their culture for example the Day of the Dead.

8. The big cities are all different from each other

It's a party city after all.

It's a family place. That moment that you realize that even Dallas is very different to Fort Worth.

9. The Rio Grande Valley

South Texas shares the border with Mexico. But it is also where many college students go to party during spring break, specifically South Padre Island. But coming from beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico, this does not impress me.

10. Rodeo

Where you get to see bull riding competitions and sometimes Pitbull in concert. Not to mention all of the carnival food.

Is that the Puerto Rican Flag hanging from the Stadium's ceiling? I'm proud.

11. Speaking about pride, understanding Texas Pride

American pride does not compete with the Texas pride.

Learning about Texas has been an adventure for the past two years of my life and I learned so much about their culture. I love Puerto Rico. I always have and always will. I am Puerto Rican. I was born and raised there, and it's my culture. But I'll have to make a big space in my heart to fit Texas.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
