Dear high school student,
It's just about time for prom season. Now, I'm sure you're super excited, especially if this is your first time attending. I'm sure you've heard lots of stories and seen plenty of movies about crazy fun prom nights. I'm also sure you're probably freaking out trying to make everything about prom night perfect.
But I'm here to tell you that you don't have to. Prom doesn't have to be your most favorite day of your high school experience. In fact, I went to three proms and none of them would make my list of top high school memories. Honestly, I think prom is kind of overrated. Here's why.
1. You spend a ton of money on a dress that you'll probably never wear again. It's literally just so you look good in pictures. Talk about being materialistic...
2. Prom sucks for all the single people. There are too many stupid worries and tears over whether you'll be asked or by who. If you're a guy, you have to figure out who to ask. Too stressful.
3. You spend more money on a limo or party bus, as well as paying to actually attend the prom and eat there. Let's be honest, I could get a similar meal somewhere else for half the price.
4. It's hard trying to plan said transportation. It can also be chaotic trying to figure out a plan for after the prom.
5. You spend even more money on a corsage and boutonniere. If you're a girl, you may also pay for your hair and makeup, too.
6. All these things are only for a few hours since you'll probably end up leaving the prom early anyways. By midnight, bobby pins will be falling out of the rat's nest on top of your head, and your mascara likely will be smudged.
7. Prom plans require getting a group of people together, and you may sometimes have to split up your friend groups, which sucks and only causes drama. In the end, is it worth it for just one silly night?
8. There are so many other memorable things about your four years in high school. One night won't change that.
So if prom is stressing you out, or it ends up not going well for you, don't worry about it. It's overrated anyways.
Love,
An ex-high school student
