The Problem With Social Media

Is it the best or worst development in human history?

The Problem With Social Media

I just want to start off by saying that I don't hate social media. I'm constantly on Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook when I'm bored or when I need something to do. However, I feel like we live in a world where everything revolves around our phones. Who went out on a date with who, why our friend isn't texting/snapchatting us back, or why our relatives feel the need to send us endless amounts of Candy Crush requests, are constantly on our mind. We spend too much time on social media and not enough time taking in the world around us. I even know that I'm guilty of that.

The issue that takes place today is that people don't think before they post. My mom always tells me "once you hit send, tweet, or share, it's out there forever." People are so quick to post pictures without thinking of the consequences that could arise from it. On Facebook, I constantly see that someone that I'm friends with commented on someone else's picture that I'm not even friends with. So if I can see someone else's pictures, someone else can see mine. Your future employer could be browsing Facebook when suddenly they notice that your Aunt commented on your latest back to school album. They start browsing through the album and come across a picture of you completely wasted at some party, red solo cup in hand, and they automatically delete any thought they had of having you work for them.

With the 2016 Presidential Election rapidly approaching, people are beginning to post statuses or tweets about Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. On Facebook and Twitter, you can have 1,000's of friends or 100's of followers and the odds that they all have the same political views you do are extremely, extremely slim. I feel like sometimes people tweet or post statuses on Facebook just to get a reaction out of others just to prove whose political party is better. I'm not one to share my views online or in person because I know that not everyone is going to have the exact same opinion that I do. People are just so quick to post things not thinking of how it could bite them in the butt down the road.

Twitter has just become a website where teenagers rant about their feelings and how much they hate the opposite sex. Don't get me wrong, I rant about life too, but that's what I hate. Throughout high school, my friends all had Twitter long before I did but that was because I refused to make one. I didn't like that all the drama from high school revolved around who subtweeted who.

I'm not saying that social media is the worst thing that has happened within the last century, in fact, I personally think it's one of the best. i just think that somewhere in the advancement of social media and technology, we lost how to interact and communicate with others effectively and in person. What is happening to society?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
