When used correctly, naps offer several mental and physical health benefits. Here are a few napping tips to make sure that the extra time found for napping (if it is anywhere to be found..) gives you the greatest boost possible!
1. Sleep in 15 minute increments.
This measurement is most in tune with your natural sleep cycles. It will
ensure that you get restful sleep and not sleep that will leave you
feeling groggy afterwards. So that 15 or 30 minute power nap could be
just what you need when you can't seem to focus.
2. Take short, 20-30 minute) naps.
Short naps will help to improve alertness and performance. They could be
the extra boost you need to make it through that 10 page paper or pile
of lecture notes. A smaller amount of sleep will also not affect your
ability to get quality sleep when it's actually bedtime.
3. Rest somewhere peaceful and quiet.
This may be obvious, but quality of sleep is affected by environmental
factors. Though you may be able to sleep through anything, it doesn't
mean you should. You will get more refreshing sleep if you limit the
surrounding noise and light sources.
4. Midday is primetime.
A morning nap, if you ever reach this low point, will not do much for
your energy levels. Try resting during the middle of the day. It is a
break to get excited about. It will provide enough recharge to get you
to bedtime, where you should be then able to get a restful night of
sleep and help get your body back on the right track.
5. Nap to relax and rejuvenate.
A nap, an answer to a lot of our prayers, is also an answer to your
stress. Restful naps are proven to reduce stress levels. This means a
quick snooze could provide you with a new attitude and a fresh
perspective that will get you through that to-do list a little more
easily.
