Just Press Play

A poem I wrote about my best friend

Just Press Play
Cayla Keiser

she knows how to be.

to give, to care.

to help, to lend.

it may seem bad,

but she’ll know.

she’ll know what to do,

how to handle it all.

how to cope when you feel you can’t any longer.

because you can feel happiness again.

she’ll know.

she knows how to comfort.

never a moment that she won’t pause her own story,

just to help you press play on your own.

the track may be running out,

you feel like it just can’t be replayed.

but she’ll know.

she’ll rewind the tape,

wipe away the past experience,

and teach you how to just press play.

she’ll know.

she knows what to say.

you might be blue and about to cry;

uncertain and filled with confusion.

but she’ll know.

she’ll know how to answer your call for advice.

doesn’t matter the subject.

doesn’t matter the time.

the right words will be said,

and you’ll be okay again.

she knows.

she knows how you feel, even before you do.

through the look in your eyes,

or the lack of emotion in your text messages,

which radiant with joy, always.

you may not understand why you’re down.

but she’ll know.

she’ll know from the moment your frown appears,

that life is getting you down.

that you feel upset, but not sure why.

that you might need to take time to make sense of it all.

she knows.

she knows that she doesn't know it all.

she knows that she may have to stop to think about the right answer.

she knows that sometimes, she just won’t have an answer.

she knows that she’ll have to disappoint sometimes.

'

despite what she may not know,

she does know that when life hands you lemons,

you have to make lemonade.

and that when life hands you lemons again,

she knows to throw the lemonade on it

and smile.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
